Driving back over the moor late last night from Princetown I stopped to look at the stars - they were amazing and there were so many - photo doesn't do it justice - if it is clear again tonight check it out!

Defra announcement today 'we are also extending the Farming in Protected Landscapes (FiPL) programme to continue to support and improve England’s most precious areas of natural beauty,' - this is good news as is the uplift in HLS payments

This is a very good summary of the Molinia issues on Dartmoor - well worth a read dartmoorpreservation.co.uk/swincombe-da...

Two tyre punctures in a week up on Dartmoor! Thankfully a couple of friends helped me out and it didn't turn into a complete headache. Nevertheless - need to be better prepared so in addition to my spare wheel I got a couple of years ago I now have a jack and an electric pump

First primrose!

Red Admiral in my garden this afternoon

16.5km walk from Belstone across Cullever Steps out to Dinger and Great Knesset and back: 50 Herdwicks, 20 Scotch Blackfaces and 2 ponies ...... #Dartmoor

A brilliant Countryfile tonight - based on Dartmoor involving two projects I have been involved with for over a decade: Fingle Woods and the South West Peatland Partnership re-wetting project where I work as an ecological consultant and social scientist. www.bbc.co.uk/iplayer/epis...

so .... Exeter City have drawn Nottingham Forest at home in the 4th Round of the FA Cup ...... great draw ..... will we get tickets however ......

Been at St James Park this afternoon to watch Exeter City beat Oxford United 3-1 to reach the 4th round of the FA Cup - who will we get in the draw tomorrow?

I want our farming sector to succeed. I want it to be sustainable – financially and environmentally. www.gov.uk/government/s...

In 2024 - in my garden, on Dartmoor and on the Isles of Scilly - I didn't see a single Small Tortoiseshell butterfly - our once most common butterfly appears to be heading for extinction and we don't know why - will its fortunes pick up in 2025?

Great Padel games this afternoon- thanks all

Boxing Day footie - in the big bank City win 3-1 (somehow!)

The seven books you need to unlocking Dartmoor's botany .... then you need to decide if it's over-grazing or under-grazed and determine 'Favourable Condition' ... and then what to do about it .... go for Countryside Stewardship Higher Level Offer or scratch your head and lose the will to live?

Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year to all my friends and family - my favourite experience this year was a comet over St Agnes on the Isles of Scilly in October - wonder what next year holds?

I don’t wear shirts and jackets very often but hey ho - it is Christmas- headache a potential tomorrow

Chris van Tulleken's documentary on ultra-processed food and health ..... much easier and quicker way to digest his book Ultra-processed People (which I also recommend) www.bbc.co.uk/iplayer/epis...

We have some new analysis out today on *the* biggest problem facing English nature conservation… …& increasingly climate goals… …& farm incomes… It’s the befuddling failure of Defra to stand up a higher tier land management scheme 🧵… t.co/jYmsFI4YLx

Produced this graphic for a couple of projects I'm working on #Dartmoor-if we want to solve these problems we need some empathy-if I was a hill-farmer my brain would be exploding & that wouldn't help solving the biodiversity & the climate .. time to find solutions- Defra & conservation orgs?

Been at Exeter City v Birmingham City tonight - we lost 2-0 - were a yard off the pace and it seemed like Birmingham had 12 players - however they are a huge club and former Exeter player Jay Stansfield (who plays for Birmingham now) cost more than the entire Exeter squad!

If I'm honest I'm never quite sure what Bio-waste Spreader is going to say next (Private Eye)

Never seen bramble leaves like this before - St Agnes on the Isles of Scilly in October

Whilst a yellow warning of snow was issued for the south west yesterday the forecast for Exeter today was rain - instead we have snow and quite a lot - enough to have collapsed a big bough off my oak tree next to my back door. Additionally olive tree not enjoying it.
