I sometimes like artists to have artistic liberty with art but you should definately get a reference done since that can be more of a frustration to them.
For example I like doing species swap but they have a base ref to work from.

Parents show up and can immediatly tell why that kid with the knife is messed up in the head. The mother proceeds to beat and drag him off into the car. Clear indications social services should be called but they do nothing. Apparently the school already knows but nothing happens either.
