Privacy as we know it is done, and social control is about reach a new level, unless we speak up now. Breaking news and an urgent essay, with quote from Carissa Véliz. open.substack.com/pub/garymarc...

Ironically the "nice thing to do" costs LLM owners millions in processing and is ethically wrong for energy and monetary reasons.

HiveHome.com do not have a very elegant fail for their "reset password" process. This is the result of clicking the link from the email they send. It works ok via the mobile app - so there is a solution.

AI governance shouldn't ignore unethical AI marketing. To make sure AI is aligned with fundamental rights, we must also assess the types of narratives and premises AI companies are promoting, both from ethical and legal perspectives. I wrote about it today (link below).

The new article by @garymarcus.bsky.social and Ernest Davis has the answer you're going to want to keep in your pocket when an LLM defender brushes off AI's tendency to make mistakes by saying that humans make mistakes, too. garymarcus.substack.com/p/reports-of...

This has always been a bugbear of mine - errors are not just for developers - there is always some context that you can share with the visitor. Just got this one...

🚨 Will you STOP spying on customers with live facial recognition cameras @asda? I will no longer shop at #Asda supermarkets if you continue to use this rights-abusive surveillance tech. #StopAsdaSpying | @BigBrotherWatch

The latest terrible idea from my ADHD-addled brain: One-liners for creating datasets! UV makes it very easy to run scripts as one-liners, so I made a simple one-liner to turn a directory of PDFs into a @hf.co dataset.

While every news site and Hollywood name remember Val Kilmer, who sadly passed away on Tuesday - X, formerly Twitter, ("the public town square" and "more credible than the traditional news media [Elon Musk]" is quite clear that his death has been..."falsely reported".

💯

'The end game here is not that LLMs will vanish, but that LLMs will be virtually free. For most GenAI model building companies, profits will be meager. (Or nil; most are losing money; few have made any profits at all).' garymarcus.substack.com/p/genais-day... by @garymarcus.bsky.social

I wrote about Gaggle in Privacy Is Power. It's sad that it's still in business, surveilling some 6 million students. #Surveillance doesn't solve social problems. It teaches children that rights are worthless. And it is a security risk in itself #AIEthics abcnews.go.com/Technology/w...

Recommended reading. Odds are that "AGI," AI as good or better than humans at everything, is about as likely as Theranos' blood tests working, and the same kinds of people, rich and famous dilettantes, are being snookered by it.

What on earth has happened to the New York Times?

🔥🔥

This is truly insane.

Timely talks on Data and Ethics. We'll see throughout the day whether this is a call to action or just more wishful talking points.

You can do almost anything stick "AI" in front of it and fish for customers with greedy AI eyes. :)

Let's renew @garymarcus.bsky.social's effort to refer to our current form of AI as Broad, Shallow Intelligence: BSI. This is all we have right now, a digitized Good Will Hunting, something that's ingested every book yet knows nothing about the actual world. garymarcus.substack.com/p/agi-versus...

I am surprised that this is a surprise. People educated in an area can see the many mistakes produced by an AI, if they aren't they will not be able to. Add the need for people to write their understanding in their own voice - if they do indeed have understanding. arstechnica.com/ai/2025/03/r...

Is This What We Want: “The protest album features “almost silence,” said composer and AI developer Ed Newton-Rex, who organized the album. The 12 tracks consist of recordings of empty studios and performance spaces, “to symbolize what we expect will happen if the government’s proposals go through.”

👇“Now we are stuck with a system that offers equal efficiency to those who wish to exercise the legitimate functions of government and those who wish to dismantle it, or to weaponize it for their own ends.”

LLM companies to their own customers (same as to everybody else): you are on your own.

"The argument must be that no computerized system should replace the voice of voters. Do not ask if the machine can be trusted. Ask who controls them." By @eryk.bsky.social www.techpolicy.press/anatomy-of-a...

It's too early to say goodbye to search engines - Google provides sources for one. There may yet be a shakeup of the industry and AI will get caught up in that too... theconversation.com/how-your-onl...
