Student Visas Are Being Revoked Without Reason or Warning, Colleges Say www.wsj.com/us-news/educ...

So why "quietly" then?

I am convinced a major factor in the tariff disaster is that Trump has so consistently been met with cowardice and capitulation from every quarter in American politics that he imagined other countries would just as easily fold to bullying.

People in other countries know exactly what is going on

Trump's new tariffs are now law. How much are they going to hurt? By my analysis, this set of tariffs will be fifty times more painful than those imposed in the first Trump term.

As we move into deeply perilous waters for the global economy remember that in 2008, you had 1) reasonably competent people in top posts in the US govt financial system, 2) a decisive level of bipartisan cooperation in Sept 2008 AND deep collaboration between the US, the Europe and leading …

I was privileged to join wonderful colleagues at Cornell today talking about challenges to democracy here at home and abroad. This gutting news dropped after we adjourned for dinner. Silence won’t shield university presidents from this administration. Appeasement isn’t protection—it’s surrender.

Downfall parody time

Request is for 13x the current annual custody budget. Not sure people are preparing for the scale of the domestic gulags this administration wants to build and how many more people will be snatched if this operation gets up and running.

"take your medicine" what the hell, we weren't sick, this isn't medicine, it's poison

Treasury bonds are “safe” to the extent the U.S. is viewed as stable and certain to honor its commitments. But we’re in thrall to a lunatic who just slit the throat of the global market for no reason & obviously thinks nothing of casually shirking obligations. So why would anyone view us that way?

It was amazing. But people need to start thinking of doing this every week/day

Highly alarming: "1/No precedent to changing election rules after election 2/Griffin hasn’t found single example of ineligible voting 3/Only challenging absentee/early votes + ballots in D counties 4/Only challenging votes in his race (not Trump's) 5/ Two recounts already affirmed Riggs victory"

This all alone is an open-and-shut cause for impeachment, yes there are dozens of others but sometimes it's clarifying to just look at one

FUNDSTRAT tonight: “.. in the last few days, we have had many conversations with macro fund managers. .. A few have quietly wondered if the President might be insane.”

WSJ: “.. The Chamber of Commerce declined to comment about the potential lawsuit. Neil Bradley, the group’s chief policy officer, said that ‘like others, we have a lot of questions about the legality of these tariffs.’” 👀 @wsj.com www.wsj.com/politics/pol...

And Senators Ron Wyden, Rand Paul, Chuck Schumer and Tim Kaine just released a companion version in the Senate:

If single posts aren't depressing enough Dan has you covered. Just non-stop destruction at this point

Someone just reminded me of this. From July 26, 2024: 🇺🇸 (via Bespoke)

OH REALLY! YOU DON'T SAY!?!

FFS WHY??? We are past the point of normal order. We're at the point where if we do not impeach this week our democracy may die, the economy will be devastated, and wars may soon break out THAT WE WILL NOW LOSE!!!

The U.S. has slapped a tariff on Australia despite the fact that it’s one of the few countries on earth with which we have an actual trade *surplus* www.wsj.com/livecoverage...

At least 19 states, all of whom with Democratic attorneys general, presented “undisputed evidence” they were not receiving FEMA funds already appropriated by Congress.

not going to help housing prices

This is a thousand times more of a threat than the economic devastation we’re all reasonably enough distraught about out. The constitutional order as we’ve known it is hanging by a fraying thread that trump is holding a straight razor to with no one even reaching to withdraw his hand.

Sargent's podcast with economist Kathryn Anne Edwards is the single best explanation of this debacle, how absolutely goal-free tariffs are, devoid of an achievable end game. "Manufacturing" in Trump world reflects a centuries-old - fantasy - concept of wage earners toiling in factories.

Martin Wolf is not messing around here www.ft.com/content/d96d...

For science I’d like to see a prominent Democrat to claim the 2024 election was rigged, just to compare the ensuing shitshow to the total non response now whenever Trump still insists he won in 2020.

Trump's DOJ wants to give refunds to insurrectionists, many of whom assaulted police on January 6 (and should be in jail)

NEW: A case study on the effect that Trump's tariffs will have on the one specific industry—the board game business. (The outlook is not pretty.) www.thebulwark.com/p/trump-tari...

Who among us could have predicted that Donald Trump would make damaging and ill-considered decisions? www.nytimes.com/2025/04/08/b...

From back-to-back 20%+ years — and “envy of the world” — to this. @nytimes.com www.nytimes.com/2025/04/08/b...

He's laser focused on lowering prices from day one, and obviously the best way to do that is to prevent Americans from buying at low prices.

We hang together or we hang separately. Could not be clearer what is happening and how universities must respond.

Per White House pool: “Were going to be announcing very shortly a major tariff on pharmaceuticals,” Trump said. He said that will bring pharmaceutical production back to the United States.

🚨 JFC, per pool: Trump complained that the U.S. doesn't produce its own pharmaceuticals any more and talked about disparities in global prices. “We’re going to be announcing very shortly a major tariff on pharmaceuticals.” He said that will bring pharmaceutical production back to the U.S.

University presidents, the time is now! Unshackle the general counsel's office! File all the lawsuits! Release the faculty upon the op-ed sections! Write to your alumni, parents, and donors! You have nothing to lose but a tiny percentage of your enormous endowments... www.nytimes.com/2025/04/08/u...

www.nytimes.com/2025/04/08/u.... Imagine if all these universities had the backbone to defy Trump all at once, in unison? Why sell your soul to “protect” a gutter carcass? He’s going to suck them all dry anyway. Get all the alumni, students, faculty to protest 1/2

Absolutely every business should do this.

Who could have predicted it? Unless we stand up and say no, right now, the authoritarian will just keep coming and unlawfully destroy our civil society. www.nytimes.com/2025/04/08/u...

"This is the big, irreversible truth about Donald Trump's second presidency. No one can safely count on any of the promises, agreements, arrangements, or understandings that life runs on." - @tomscocca.bsky.social www.indignity.net/tax-penalty/

A fantastic thing about the idea that Trump is doing madman theory is it clearly doesn’t work if a) every other country knows you’re doing it and/or b) every other country knows you’re a madman

Today's tariff optimism is that stonks only fell another -1.6%.

I think it’s very funny that one of the go-to defenses for Trump’s very stupid version of mercantilism is “he’s had these views for forty years.” Oh well, then we absolutely *gotta* let him wreck the global economy if he’s believed this nonsense for long enough.

Wall Street keeps begging. Ackman keeps tongue bathing. Time they realize the only deliverance is Democrats and enough Republicans stripping Trump of all his (already frankly illegal) tariff powers. It’s a simple vote. Trump isn’t the one they need to beg or threaten.

If it were your active mission to destroy the geopolitical standing of the United States, I don't know how you could do a more effective job than the current administration short of, like, invading Switzerland or nuking the Vatican.

There is a strong legal case that Trump tariffs are illegal (because he has not authority to issue them.) No major corporation or trade association, however, has filed suit because they are all afraid of making Trump mad. The only company that has sued is a small stationary store in Florida.

Oh god I didn't even think of this until now. FUUUU.

Cool cool. www.bloomberg.com/news/article...

it’s a perfect plan. we will fire everyone doing skilled work in science, technology and medicine and force them into factories making consumer electronics. this will enrich the country somehow.
