Iberdrola is the company in many cases. They pay 4.3% yield to shareholders right now. Compare that to 4% tax free for premium bonds with zero risk. By the way, if you have an occupational pension you are already a shareholder.

It's a small step, but one in the right direction. It should help ensure very little divergence in standards which essentially means there will be fewer practical obstacles in the way of any meaningful re-join in future.

In the mid 80s when the overcharge was about £4 billion every year we did a test in our day release class at college with a tax expert who went through our payslips. 20% of the class was paying too much PAYE, no one was being undercharged.

They're supposed to use it on everyone, but in practice they make an assessment regarding cost effectiveness and resources. I don't know the current figures but worth noting in the past the amount of uncollected tax was exceeded by the amount of overcharged tax year after year after year.

They do it already under the proceeds of crime act.

HMRC already has powers to:
Order information to be produced
Execute search warrants
Make arrests
Search suspects and premises
Recover criminal assets through the Proceeds of Crime Act 2002.
What they are getting is more staff to carry out civil and criminal investigations.

They have that 'what the papers say' segment and these days their own take on the news seems to parrot it. Which is telling, as most of the UK papers are biased, right wing rags, more than prepared to talk the country down at every opportunity.

BBC Today this morning taking the line that this meant mortgages were going higher but the lady from Skipton building society told them that was rubbish as things stand and this was NOT a repeat of the Truss debacle.

They seem to believe that giving their personal data, which they'll never consent to, would be a sacrifice not worth the obvious benefits to the greater whole. I find it immensely frustrating and sad. Based on other issues I know that they will reflect a very large segment of the general population.

I'm a member of a small social media investment site of about 30 regular members. We're all aged about 45-70. Among this small and skewed sample most are not only against it, but actively and vehemently against it in the belief all their personal medical data will be sold to/accessed by 3rd parties

So many people are against a comprehensive medical database of patient records across the NHS but I see it as absolutely essential to deliver efficiencies. Not to mention if I have an accident in another town it'd be nice if the docs could see my medical history!

You can only win in the system you are standing in. There has probably never been as much tactical voting as in that last election. Come 2029 those who lent their votes to Green and LDs may well come back to Labour as the only means of keeping out a Reform/Tory coalition.
