Some of my happiest days at Princeton (before I dropped out, er, took a leave of absence) were walking the paths in the Institute woods. I had a favorite beech tree to climb - beeches, I learned, were part of the climax forest, remaining or taking over in forest succession as fields left fallow.

Revisiting Boulder CO today after many years. Looking forward to the view of the Flatirons above the town, and the view from them if we hike up. What a country we have!

And where is that social contract in place? “No police protection, no peace for pedestrians” does not seem like winning strategy.

I think it grows out of the old bike messenger culture, now in the commuter and delivery mindset. It glorified speed, daring, and ignoring traffic signals. Getting dangerous for pedestrians even as car traffic has diminished. A 60 pound e-bike going 30mph is deadly.

Rather that than see it get really pissed off at the stupid tricks we made its ancestors do. Keep it happy and occupied.
