A ā€œHMAā€ in law enforcement lingo… ā€œHispanic male adultā€

It’s fairly standard for commercial property owners to give the local police standing authorization (a ā€œletter of agencyā€) to remove and arrest people from closed areas of their property (either after hours or areas completely closed to the public).

I keep having to remind my parents that Prop 13 (that they voted for) applies equally to residential and commercial properties. The ā€œpeople being taxed out of their homesā€ propaganda was some pretty strong Kool-Aid.

Stubbed out? It’s built as standard gauge, so extending actual BART trains out there would be a big effort besides the electrification issue. If it’s ever electrified, I’d expect it to be overhead like was done for Caltrain, which is fairly ā€œeasyā€.

The traffic stop that it’s all based on happened in Tennessee. He was on his way from Houston to Maryland with a group of construction workers when he was pulled over.

Seems pretty reasonable. Iceland likely doesn’t have any of the animal diseases they are normally worried about.

Too bad Legos are from Denmark.

In the US, anyone can set up a business/organization and call themselves a university and issue degrees. Accreditation by a recognized body is what separates real schools from diploma mills.

In general, accreditation is a quality assurance program which helps universities communicate about the quality of their programs. This is used by the public to determine if their programs and degrees are actually worth anything.

Yup. Though I need to figure out a better way of filtering that fire hose for my purposes. Not sure if simply reading the most recent hour or three worth of posts provides a representative sample of viewpoints.

(A school has to be accredited by a recognized accreditation body for its students to use a number of federal financial aid programs at it)

Theoretically, the Trump Administration could threaten the Middle States Commission on Higher Education (Columbia’s accreditor) with de-listing if they refused to revoke Columbia’s accreditation. That would be a nuclear level mess and would immediately get tied up in the courts.

The accreditation system is already run by private associations. The only involvement the federal government has is publishing a list of accreditation bodies recognized for certain student aid programs.

These are federal agents working on immigration enforcement, not state/local police.

The ā€œCivil Reserve Air Fleetā€ is a contractual arrangement that is comprised of ~450 aircraft from the fleets of US commercial airlines. It was established after the Berlin Airlift and has only been used three times, in connection with the Afghanistan and Iraq conflicts. That would go over well…

Wonder what the EDTA is there for… looks like it would either be to help dissolve lime scale, or to preserve the (artificial) color.

Society has a fixation on measuring kids against each other. It’s unhealthy, but it’s so hard to get away from. Ideally grades should succinctly communicate how well a student has mastered the curriculum in absolute terms, not relative to their peers.

One of the things that draws people to the conservative ideologues is the sense of authenticity they have. While it often isn’t actually authentic, it sure isn’t the product of a bunch of focus groups.

Yeah. Trump definitely sees himself as part of that constituency.

It’s more about NYC regional politics than the actual policy. The people it ā€œinconveniencesā€ the most are working and middle class people from the suburbs who are accustomed to driving into Manhattan, instead of using public transport. That group has a large contingent of conservative/Trump voters.

My hot take is that mass transit systems around the nation should just add RGB gamer lights to everything: staircases, pedestrian tunnels, track tunnels, bus sheds, la sombrita, the exterior of buses and trains.

It’s hard to judge how much of this is self preservation versus an actual ideological shift.

So bad it would take something like a catastrophic terrorist attack that kills thousands of Americans for us to get around to building something like that.

This is not meant as humor. Americans are so extremely privileged that I can actually say most probably don’t even know what the real definition of ā€œdiarrheaā€ is. Diarrhea is a leading cause of death worldwide. And we spent the last century doing so much to make that not be the case here. Good luck

It’s absolutely illegal. It’s probably reckless driving (a misdemeanor), but mounting a video display like that for entertainment is also explicitly a violation of the California Vehicle Code (that guy appears to be near LA).

It doesn’t have to be a felony… they just need to make the current ā€œup to 90 days in county jailā€ a credible threat. Right now there’s basically no deterrence for these yahoos.
