FOUND!
A Mastodon follower identified the locations as San Mateo, from the corner of Southwood Drive and 39th Avenue. As many suggested, that is Coyote Point in the distance and the empty spot in the middle is the future site of Hillsdale High School (opened 1955)

I started going to Jim Cranna's improv class in Nov 1988, my first exposure to working actors, local comedians, tv and radio talent. Midnight Caller gave work to many locals, I'd love to see it just for the old friends.

I think during the Spanish and Mexican eras, the land was heavily grazed by cattle, eradicating native scrub

Not sure this is accurate, my understanding is that when SF boomed in 1849-50 that all the trees were cut for fuel, etc. the Oak Woodlands in northeast Golden Gate Park are natural second growth trees sprouted from stumps, examples of what it was like in places. Though, yes I lot of sand everywhere

Are you familiar with the area? Depends on the time of year, green grass comes up in the winter after the rain starts grows through spring then turns brown and blows away in summer.
