So more simply put - populism was a necessary step, but it was the failures of populism that led to rise of the Socialist movement in the US

I think some of it is deliberate but also a lot of it can be laziness or lack of imagination. If you think axiomatically Texans are anti-labor unions and you read a Dallas newspaper man say the same thing, why bother checking?

If you haven't read it, here was a piece I wrote for @jacobin about the fight against private property. I always heard this tale told as how "law 'n order" came to Texas. In fact, Texans were fighting back against the power of big landowners!

2. Just how much people read socialist/labor papers. There's an assumption that working people aren't interested in reading about politics & theory. In the 1800s people were! Yes, in Austin/Houston but in far off Tascosa, TX cowboys were inspired by what they read to go on strike

Historians copying verbatim word of mouth reports from far-flung newspapers (LIKE IN BOSTON!). Bosses knew how to get their story out 1st & workers didn’t. Even worse historians from the 50s attributing newspaper op-Eds as “statements” from this or that group. Once an early source gets it wrong
