Merz stands with Zelenskyy after shameless attacks from Trump & Vance

The United States of Disgrace. edition.cnn.com/2025/02/28/p...

Ukraine is not alone. Germany together with our European allies stands united alongside #Ukraine - and against the Russian aggression. Ukraine can build on unwavering support from Germany, Europe and beyond. Their defence of democracy & their quest for peace & security is ours.

Big question about what led climate maverick and democrat Senator Whitehouse to vote for Greer. A theory: Whitehouse believes that Greer has potential to push for 'carbon tariff' legislation that has strong bipartisan support in the senate.

If only we had a trade instrument to retaliate against non-coercive systemic trade law violations in real time to protect EU economic security. Read more on my proposal 👉 odi.org/en/insights/... www.ft.com/content/2f02...

The blue and yellow of Ukraine. The colours of resistance against imperialism. On the eve of this grim anniversary, they adorn our building as a symbol of our unflinching support for the Ukrainian people. Our neighbours, partners, and future EU members.

I can't find a free version, but I think I get/love the idea: the Canadians should retaliate against Trump tariffs with a CBAM. Maybe Canada could work with other countries on this approach. www.theglobeandmail.com/business/com...

Glad to see my piece on 'Responding to Trump's Tariffs: The EU Needs a new defensive Trade Weapon' featured in Alan's trade secrets column today. Indeed, the EU should upgrade its defensive trade weaponry "to create an immediate, credible counterthreat (as Canada and Mexico did)".

President Donald Trump said he plans to unveil reciprocal tariffs next week in a major escalation of his trade war with US economic partners. Trump made the announcement during a meeting with Japanese Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba on Friday but did not identify which countries would be hit.

There we go. Executive order coming. Trump administration will conduct a 6-month review of US participation in global institutions, including the IMF and World Bank - to see if they are „contrary to the interests of the US" or "can be reformed". Project 2025 called for the US to pull out. 1/2

The disconnect between what the European public can see with their own eyes and how European leaders are describing the situation is becoming untenable - as seen in 🇩🇪election developments. But can the old guard of Europe's Atlanticists like Merz and von der Leyen really ever see 🇺🇸 for what it is?

Kudos to @economist.com and @codendahl.bsky.social for featuring my two cents on the EU's options to retaliate against Trump tariffs, written up in further detail in this recent blogpost on "Responding to Trump's Tariffs' shorturl.at/HiXQU

"Some fireworks will be needed. Mr Trump will need to show that he brought Europe to heel on defence and China. European policymakers for their part need a bit of drama to force them to close ranks." My latest for @economist.com. www.economist.com/europe/2025/...

If you were designing a set of moves to weaken US leadership in the world, it would be hard to do better than the Trump administration. Just lately: - Threatening close allies with big tariffs - Harming the global poor w/ aid cutoff - Eroding US institutions/rule of law wapo.st/4jI7On5

An entire US agency was abolished this weekend without congressional authorization.

In Trump’s first term there was at least something to analyse underlying the tariffs - eg long running complaints of the steel industry, real frustration with China. This time…

Mexico is imposing tariffs on US goods. The tariffs will initially be at 5% to 20%. The products: pork, cheese, apples, grapes, potatoes, cranberries, bourbon, steel & aluminum. They were chosen strategically because they have a significant impact on regions that voted for Trump.

Canada is filing WTO and USMCA complaints against Trump's tariffs. Won't make a big difference in practical terms, but seems worth doing on principle.

Wow. #Merz is so solidly in charge of the CDU and his campaign that no other than Angela #Merkel felt compelled to intervene (not her style at all, under different circumstances). www.buero-bundeskanzlerin-ad.de/erklaerungen...

Danke! ♥️

It would be hypocritical & short-sighted if, after years of saying Europe is too dependent on others, Europe decides to introduce even *more* dependency on 🇺🇸 by being bullied into buying LNG it doesn't need. But Europe's Atlanticist leaders don't want to think about their Western dependencies.
