Exciting Milestone: Our Report Featured in Nature! ✨ www.nature.com/articles/d41... Happy to announce that our report on the science-for-policy interface through the eyes of professionals has been spotlighted in a correspondence published by Nature. With Krieger, @drlmelchor.bsky.social, Almeida

Legacy media keeps pushing “young man have radicalized” narrative, to fit their equally wrong “the people have become more right-wing narrative. Real story is “radicalization” of young women… but, like their sisters in previous generations, they only live in shadows (negations) of their male peers.

"There can be no lasting democracy without free and open science" www.politico.eu/article/eu-u...

Science is no basis for a society, it can only inform political choices. Science is a way of thinking but it is not an ideology, value-system or morality, so open to being co-opted by any of these. Scientists also have ideologies, values and moralities that inform their research choices.

Welcome optimism from @dsquareddigest.bsky.social in the fascinating “The Unaccountability Machine”

Come and join the research work of the Joint Research Centre @ec.europa.eu on the science behind science for policy, democracy, disinformation and polarisation! Deadline 14 May 2025. www.linkedin.com/posts/david-...

"The “post-truth condition” cannot be fully addressed through correcting occurrences of misinformation nor by cultivating an appreciation of the scientific process." Brilliant from Prof Sibel Erduran

How much of political culture (e.g. compromise, campaigning, rhetorical norms) is simply a product of the electoral system (PR vs FPTP, compulsory) rather than history, media etc?

Freedom of science and research is one of Europe's great strengths. It’s how excellence and innovation thrive. We’ll make proposals to help scientists and researchers ‘Choose Europe’. The best and brightest from around the world.
To make Europe the home of innovation again. → europa.eu/!JFF7jm

Are the limits to government a product of prevailing social norms * administrative capacity of the state? If so, understanding norms and how they change, pluralistic ignorance etc is vital. But also trustworthiness, capacity and efficiency of public administrations.

🧪 “Science serves society best when its integrity is protected from political influence.” It’s a welcome development for the American Psychological Association (APA) starting to speak up, now after 1,000+ terminated NSF grants 👏 updates.apaservices.org/statement-on...

“Truth, though powerless and always defeated in a head-on clash with the powers that be, possesses a strength of its own: whatever those in power may contrive, they are unable to discover or invent a viable substitute for it.” on.ft.com/434lWRa

For the last 3 yrs, I was the director for the Science of Science program at the NSF. We funded projects on science communication - science communication to the public, communication of public priorities to scientists, citizens engagement & participation in science. 🧵

In response to President Donald Trump’s campaign to shrink the federal government, the National Science Foundation has abolished its chief mechanism for getting the scientific community’s input on its programs. scim.ag/42sQ9YJ

Mis/disinformation research officially cancelled. Understanding the creation, content, distribution, and susceptibility is one of today’s key scientific and societal challenges. Researching this is not free speech infringement. Such a claim is intentionally misleading. www.nsf.gov/updates-on-p...

New(ish), from me: Andor returns on April 22. The first season detailed how bureaucracies in a totalitarian regime function, what is the toll of living under such regimes, and what causes people to rebel. Those themes feel more salient than ever. 🧵 donmoynihan.substack.com/p/the-return...

I was interviewed for the “Ideas” section of @politicalquarterly.bsky.social I was very happy to be asked to reflect a bit on my career in addition to contemporary politics. Hope you like it!

Von der Leyen with some optimism on the state of Europe in a @zeit.de interview today: “We don’t have bros or oligarchs making the rules. We don’t invade our neighbors, and we don’t punish them. […] there are 12 countries on the waiting list to become members of the EU” www.zeit.de/politik/2025...

Interested in science for policy and speak Polish, Spanish or French? Come and work with us at the Joint Research Centre of the European Commission. Deadline 6 May 2025. www.linkedin.com/posts/david-...

Excellent, especially for the revelation that there was a realisation in the late forties that "free speech" is not enough but that democracy also needs truthful information as a public good.

Constant disinformation is not aimed at making people believe the disinformation but at ensuring that no one believes anything anymore.

We are the Joint Research Centre of the European Commission @ec.europa.eu We bring the science and knowledge to shape EU policies to improve the lives of all Europeans. Follow the work of our scientists in this JRC Starter Pack > go.bsky.app/URC6fUb #EUScience #Science4Policy

The thing about Europe: it's the actual land of the free now. Whatever problems Europe has - and it has plenty - it is looking pretty damn good by comparison these days. My Charlemagne this week www.economist.com/europe/2025/...

Is science becoming more like Cassandra in our democracies? Science has never been more productive and innovative but seems to be crowded out of public debate. We need new models to help science to earn the hearing it deserves and thereby help governments earn public trust.

This still seems to me to be the very best use of AI to improve our democracy. Debunkbot is the indefatigable sparring partner that changes conspiracy theorists minds because there is literally no argument it cannot rebut, unlike a human partner which sooner or later gives up.

Do you care about democracy in the EU? @ec.europa.eu wants to hear your views on disinformation, information manipulation, elections, free media, civil society, societal resilience, citizen participation and engagement. Researchers - share your evidence! Deadline 26 May ec.europa.eu/info/law/bet...

“This apparent close alignment undermined confidence that doctors’ recommendations were independent and evidence-based”. Powerful article on the importance of trust and the challenge of earning it at a time of polarisation.

Trump administration orders half of national forests open for logging wapo.st/4jfr8a9

Is there something called the “analysis fallacy”? The desire to solve some of the most intractable policy problems involving trade-offs of incommensurate values with some sort of model, experiment, study or AI to produce “the”answer rather than through deliberation, supported by analysis.

It’s still a goal of mine to help make this the most famous, well-known and UNDERSTOOD quote about cities in history. Please share it as much as you can.

“To safeguard scientific integrity, European countries must prepare for the worst, protecting scientific institutions and researchers from ideologically driven harm.” Brilliant call to arms from @kityates.bsky.social

Main problem of science for policy is fundamentally different nature of science and politics which makes it hard for scientists and policymakers to collaborate. The fact that this difference is obscured, sometimes deliberately, makes it harder. We need new ideas on how “is” should become “ought”.
