Obligatory Morgan Library snap. Obviously superb collections and spaces, but really interesting focus on the first Librarian, Belle da Costa Greene, and black women librarians of the early C20th

Senate House indulging in a little bit of Nazi cosplay…

Fabulous visit to @britishlibrary.bsky.social Boston Spa courtesy of Andy Appleyard and colleagues. Such impressive facilities and key infrastructure for our national collection

I wonder if Clarivate's definition of 'affordable' will match that of the library community? www.researchinformation.info/news/clariva...

I’ve enjoyed other works by Han Kang, but just couldn’t get to grips with Greek Lessons. Perhaps a bit too elliptical and poetic for my tastes

Elsevier parent company reports 10% rise in profit, to £3.2bn. Scientific arm of Relx reports adjusted operating profit of £1.17 billion in 2024. www.researchprofessionalnews.com/rr-news-worl...

I stumbled across the novels of Elizabeth Taylor (no, not the actress) recently. They are small scale and domestic, but beautifully written with a precision that makes her characters real to you. So far my favourite is her first, At Mrs Lippincote’s, where the tensions of WWII disrupt suburbia

Join us on a short #LGBTQHistoryMonth thread as we look into a symbol of identity, solidarity and love, hidden between plain covers and written under an alias at a time when being openly yourself could be a criminal offence #LGBTHM

A pleasure to join with both Imperial colleagues and representatives of the wider library community to honour @chrisabanks.bsky.social as she steps away from her Imperial role. But we’re reassured that we won’t be losing her drive and expertise…

We are in a war on knowledge, a war on facts, and a war on truth. The atrocious sacking of the 11th Archivist of the United States, Colleen Shogan (which she announced on her LinkedIn account last night) heralds a new era of burning of the books. www.linkedin.com/posts/activi...

Excellent news from @hiddenref.bsky.social. As long-term supporters it is great to see secure long-term funding

You can now catch-up with 2 great (free!) webinars from @rluk.bsky.social held this week. Adopting, implementing & supporting open digital infrastructure in libraries - bit.ly/DSFonD Machine Learning Approaches to Gender Bias in Archival Curation - bit.ly/ICILOND

Totally fabulous paper just given by Lucy Havens on gender bias/archives/ML, recording will be available with RLUK for those who missed it

Dorothy B. Porter changed libraries 💜 The Dewey Decimal System used to only have two classifications for Black people: 325 (colonization) & 326 (slavery). Each book by a Black person was put into one of these classifications. A book of poetry? Classified as colonization. Enter Dorothy B. Porter 🧵

Having missed it on release I have just got round to watching the excellent Hidden Figures, the story of the human computers who made early space flight possible. It feels particularly important to remember the vital contributions of those whose stories have traditionally not been at the forefront…

I love this interaction between the hard sciences and the classics - producing magical results

There's still time to sign up for #RLUK virtual events taking place this week. Tomorrow there is an #RLUKDSF event on Realising Open Digital Infrastructure 👇

I would urge anyone with any interest in HE and the UK scholarly publishing landscape to read this excellent piece by @tweeterbarr.bsky.social about exiting the Elsevier deal...

Always feels worth pointing this stuff out: in 2023 the American Society of Microbiology had reserves of $140 million and their CEO was paid $800,000.

We have a great calendar of events in our free, online series Inclusive Collections, Inclusive Libraries. See details of the new season in the thread below and please do register

Early exit of three universities from national deal with Elsevier shows why broader reset of UK publishing agreements is both necessary and likely to achieve lower prices for institutions, say experts including @ucylpay.bsky.social @samuelmoore.org www.timeshighereducation.com/news/early-e...

Good to see. Diamond Open Access publishers like Programming Historian @proghist.bsky.social have found it tricky to get financial support because many libraries have had to prioritise these big packages instead of our new open publishing models that cost so much less. #OpenAccess

I was asked to write an Op Ed piece by @resprofnews.bsky.social on universities cancelling journal Big Deals: www.researchprofessionalnews.com/rr-news-uk-v... I was keen to stress that at least some of any savings must be used to support new, fairer models
