The Dewey Decimal System used to only have two classifications for Black people: 325 (colonization) & 326 (slavery). Each book by a Black person was put into one of these classifications. A book of poetry? Classified as colonization.

FYI, there's a blog for cataloging in Dewey that talks about changes and proposals. It's neat if you like granular info.
Porter was a powerhouse.
"She was key to building up what is now the Moorland-Spingarn Research Center as one of the world's best collection of library materials for Black/Africana history and culture."
As a Howard University librarian, she worked relentlessly to classify work within the collection by genre & author. ๐งต
She is a librarian, she is a pioneer. She had an extraordinary 43-year library career.
