General strike time.

My suggestion to the American people: Don't comply. Don't obey ridiculous and harmful executive actions and laws. Don't fall in line. Don't allow yourselves to be ruled by fear. Don't draw away from your neighbours and family; embrace them.

Finally gave up on Twitter completely.

I read something that stuck with me recently. When someone says they are "opposed to DEI" ask them what part they are opposed to, diversity, equity, or inclusion? Ask them to be really specific about what they oppose.

Whenever I get yet another phone call from a Telus representative, I am reminded of the scene in the Princess Bride where the torturer uses The Machine to suck Westley's life way. Telus: "I've just sucked 30 seconds of your life away with this pointless phone call. How do you feel?"

This picture looks like something @howiehua.bsky.social would create. I love that the first frame here is a meme within a meme!

Happy New Year everyone! 2025 is a fascinating number, for those of you interested in numerology. 2025 = 45² and since 45 = (1+2+3+4+5+6+7+8+9) 2025 = (1+2+3+4+5+6+7+8+9)² That's kind of fun to me!

My lips are numb still, from the process of replacing a filling an hour ago. I took a drink from my water bottle and my mind was like, "This is an oval opening in this water bottle spout." I had to double-check with my eyes to confirm that it is in fact a circle. Cognition is wild, y'all!

How are the graphs different? How are they similar? How are the situations different? How are they similar? Which graph matches with which situation, and how do you know? #connectingreps #mathsky #edusky

Alanis Morissette's Jagged Little Pill, obviously.

Nursery child sets up the fruit & milk bar ready for the morning: “10 cups & 10 plates!” He looks up, spare plate in hand: “Is 11 the biggest number in the world?” he asks. “Are you wondering there might be bigger numbers somewhere?” I respond “..39?…78?…but I don’t know how big they are.”

Visited school today a high MLL (multilingual learner) population. Pairing oral instructions with visual supports as well as shape recognition in one’s first language are two strategies educators can use to support learners with accessing content and curriculum. #iteachmath #mathsky #edusky

This is a fascinating result. @covingtonedu.bsky.social Did the authors provide a reference for this study?

A close friend of ours once had a blighted ovum, which is when the fertilized egg is implanted but doesn't develop into a baby. She had a partial miscarriage. She was in terrible pain, so she went to the hospital and they did a D&C, which saved her life.

Is anyone teaching students about environmental impact of AI? This has me more worried than plagiarism. -> "Globally, AI-related infrastructure may soon consume six times more water than Denmark, a country of 6 million, according to one estimate." www.unep.org/news-and-sto... #EduSky #AIinEdu

Reading "Learning Together" by Elham Kazemi, Jessica Calabrese, Teresa Lind, Becca Lewis, Alison Fox Rednick, and Lynsey Gibbons. It's been fascinating so far. I highly recommend it if you are interested in school improvement. #edusky

Fun story: my first computer was a Wang. All I could do with it was word processing or programming in Basic. I chose Basic.

What's your favourite topic to teach? Why? #edusky

🎯🎯🎯 Dylan Kane finds the expert/novice framing "shallow" and "circular". "If problem solving fails it must be because the learners are novices, and learners are novices because they don’t learn from problem solving." fivetwelvethirteen.substack.com/p/a-critique...

At a PD today, we examined the principles behind the Math Language Routines (such as Stronger & Clearer and 3 Reads). 1) Support sense-making 2) Optimize output 3) Cultivate conversation 4) Maximize linguistic & cognitive meta-awareness It's a great resource! #MTBoS #iteachmath stanford.io/3Zfua78

OK #MTBoS #ITeachMath people, I've started a list of math ed organizations on my Bluesky profile. So far, I've found @vtmath.bsky.social, @mctm-mn.bsky.social, @hctm808.bsky.social @todos-math.bsky.social, @smtsca.bsky.social, and @nctm-math.bsky.social. Where are the others? #EduSky

I didn't even know when exactly I crossed this threshold but apparently my spam filter for comments on my blog has blocked more than 1 million spam comments. Go Akismet, Go!
