Don’t underestimate how important it is to take every single opportunity to not give billionaires your money. Can you buy local and not Amazon? Can you get it on buy nothing? Do you really need it? Billionaires get to be billionaires by taking your money. Get serious about ending that.

At some point people are going to look back at this current era of education and wonder why there was so much emphasis on getting one type of screen out of the hands of students only to have so much time in the classroom be spent...staring at another screen.

Good morning, my people. One thing I've been thinking about: academics still regard teachers not as co-professionals or partners in knowledge enactment, but as subjects secondary (if not tertiary) to their pursuit of knowledge. "Flattening" for power is not enough without conscientious action.

Passing thought. Selling writing in school as a way for students to secure future opportunity was always a losing proposition. It's an even bigger loser now with ChatGPT, et al... Need to get students seeing how writing is a valuable and enjoyable experience for NOW. A way to practice agency.

Me minding my own business the last day before break ends and Grammarly "AI-powered" ads keep popping up basically promising kids they'll write the essays for them... 😬 But sure. Let's lean into this, right?

How do we decide what gets called “AI”?

2025 hopes for math ed… Less: debates framed around the best way to teach math (emphasis on the singular) More: conversations about engaging students in many expressions, practices, and kinds of mathematics (plural)

How would you define statistics? Working on a definition for class based on the idea of story but would love to hear ideas

We don’t need millionaires and billionaires starting their own schools. We need billionaires to pay more equitably so every school can be better resourced.

AI data centers are multiplying across the U.S. and sucking up huge amounts of power. New evidence shows they may also be distorting the normal flow of electricity for millions of Americans

“Our students should see a math that is bigger than abstract representations, plotted points, and written notations. They should see a math that is active and participatory” What can Beyonce teach us about Geometry? www.davisteaching.com?p=142

On the left, my image. On the right, the Al image that was clearly trained on, and designed to plagiarize, my image. All Al generated imagery is inherently theft. It's unethical, environmentally disastrous, and does irreparable harm to both artists and society.

Who has a good teacher starter pack? Math teacher? Education in general?

It feels like more people would agree with the assertion that “AI” has intelligence than with the assertion that trees have intelligence. And that shows how little we know about both

Maybe I'm being pedantic, but when people say that AI is their "thought partner" I wonder how to have a thought partner that cannot think (or feel, or communicate with intention). What appears to be thought is an illusion that only achieves meaning through the human interpreting it.

Louisville mom sued JCPS for cutting her son’s bus. Now, she could face jail for not getting him to school. www.lpm.org/investigate/...

I’m generally skeptical of any education claim/conversation that is framed as “this works” vs “that doesn’t work” Nothing about real learning with actual people draws a line that mutually exclusive and clear cut

Seeing the dialogue about the math cartoon and so sharing this thing I wrote a while back edvotejcta.wordpress.com/2020/02/14/p...

Please stop using generative AI.

Can anyone help? There’s a term for when you learn something new and it messes with something you previously understood. What is it?!?!! Like when a student learns to cross multiply to solve a proportion but then they want to cross multiply when they see 1/2 + 1/4

Suing curriculum publishers and authors is not the move and definitely a counter productive long term strategy

Found one @thejosevilson.com

More pedagogy of Prince. Right before his Super Bowl show it started to rain. Panicked organizers call to warn him. Prince responds, "Can you make it rain harder?" Then an iconic performance of Purple Rain in a downpour. What do we miss when we only look through a deficit lens?

Where does the idea come from that inquiry-based learning is the driving philosophy & principal practice of American public schools? It's a criticism I see frequently to justify a "shift" toward teacher-driven instruction when, from what I can tell, we never left in the first place. 🤷🏼‍♂️

I just incorporated Prince into my upcoming post about community. For more, sign up here: thejosevilson.com/newsletter

Inspiring and empowering students to pursue mastery within a discipline is a good & important thing and also far far different from what our systems typically convey about “mastery”

I probably missed her part about how testing interrupts instructional time bc I'm tired...but she said Teacher Absences. After a global pandemic. Hey, #Edweek...I'm a current classroom Teacher and I'd love to write a response to this. www.edweek.org/leadership/t...

The way AI is being pushed on educators is enough to make me suspicious alone. I don't trust techbros & corporations that try to aggressively dictate what goes on in classrooms. I trust teachers. It's that simple. #EduSky

I started a blog. My first post is, shockingly, about Kentucky politics. robertkahne.com?p=18

To be very clear, as a teacher I don't want "time-saving AI tools." I want time.

We gave up Amazon a couple years ago. We wait a bit longer for things. We realize we didn’t need a thing. We spend more time looking before we buy, and are happier with the things we have. We have saved money.

Are you aware of the environmental impacts of AI? There may be good reasons to use AI. Climate modeling? Maybe! Medical reasons? Also maybe! But you making some sweet “art” is not it. www.technologyreview.com/2024/05/23/1...
