It’s a lot of time testing — I mean, my admin used the PA (during classes) like the students text, and it did interrupt more often than not, but I do think there are better options than attend school no matter what!

Whether or not we're past or still in a global pandemic, people are currently sick way too often - pneumonia, COVID, the flu, heck whooping cough is going around. There's no question that all of this illness negatively affects instructional time.

The WHO is pretty clear that COVID is still a pandemic. Investing in better HVAC and air filtration will reduce spread of all the illnesses you mentioned, but won't help the study authors blame teachers for the problem.

A colleague of mine was super frustrated this morning. She has one 45 minute block daily for core instruction with all her students. Fourth grade. ALL other times several are pulled for some intervention or service. What is the solution? Classes/periods like middle school in elementary?

Testing, pulling Ss for various groups. My daily schedule is WILD!!! Some Ss are pulled 1-3 times a day for intervention. Assemblies, field trips, TESTING & more testing. PBIS incentives etc etc. so many interruptions.

Yes!! Teachers assess their students in a variety of ways all throughout the year, yet we are mandated to give state and local tests, despite not always being able to see the results!

We get 10 personal/sick days per school year, not counting bereavement, jury duty, etc. I don't know any teachers who are willing to go over their limit unless absolutely necessary.

The point they seem to be missing is that the districts with the most hours are in the lowest performing states...

Yeah testing kids 3-4 times a year is never mentioned in all these pieces about loss of instructional time. And incentivizing teacher attendance with all these respiratory viruses ripping through schools is just plain irresponsible & short sighted.

I'm surprised at how openly this article embraces the study and ignores the reality of what goes on in classrooms. But then again, the study was published in Education Next, whose exec. editors include conservative anti-teacher pundits Michael Petrilli and Frederick Hess, so maybe not so surprising.

I saw a study a few months ago of sick time usage in different fields, and teachers had a really high bar for calling in sick. If the authors are worried about lost instruction, better systems to keep kids learning when teachers are out will accomplish more than trying to keep teachers in school.
