We've been seeing the reports on social media for a few weeks now, but @wusf.org's Mahika Kukday recently spoke to Tampa Bay area resident, Vince, who experienced it personally, as well as Simone Chriss, the director of the transgender rights initiative at Southern Legal Counsel.

This is from my "key distinctions I use to do my work" thread published at the other joint. If you read it, you will see that "journalism" is not interchangeable with "the media," which is not the same thing as "the press."

Are you a realtor in the Greater Tampa Bay region? I’m trying to connect a colleague to people who have sold their homes after last year’s hurricane damage, or are trying to sell their homes. If you’re a realtor and have clients you can reach out to, could you DM or Signal me? @ DaylinaMiller.13

Last year for Trans Day of Visibility, NBC News asked transgender people from across the country to share how their life satisfaction has changed after transition. Out of two dozen respondents, all but one said they feel more joy in their lives. For @nbcnews.com: www.nbcnews.com/nbc-out/out-...

Even at its zenith, the trendiness of “diversity” appears to have done little to improve the day-to-day lives of trans people as a vulnerable and exploited class #TDOV

Note to editors and producers: If an executive order demands action that is illegal or outside of the president’s authority, then you should not describe it as ordering something. You should say it seeks to achieve some outcome and then note it is illegal or beyond the power of the president.

Hi! I’m Daylina, a nonbinary, queer public radio journalist. I mostly cover the trans and nonbinary community in the Greater Tampa Bay region, so if you have tips or want to share your story, msg me on signal! @DaylinaMiller.13 If I’m not reporting, I’m probably playing a tabletop game.

The anti-fluoride movement has more momentum than ever. In rural counties with few dentists, tooth decay could surge to levels that have not been seen in decades, experts warn. kffhealthnews.org/news/article...

I think one of the most difficult parts of being called a groomer for being queer and nonbinary is that I was groomed at church by a man when I was 15 and when I was scared and told an adult I was told I should consider myself lucky “a good New Apostolic boy” was interested in a weirdo like me.

One of the worst things to happen to TV news in my lifetime is the fixation on how politicians should deal with a crisis from a PR perspective rather than the scandal itself. This wasn't common years ago. They just discussed the substance of the news, not how politicians should spin things.

UPDATE: The use of civilian software to discuss sensitive military and government matters came to light after a journalist from The Atlantic magazine said he was mistakenly added to a group chat on Signal.

Rep. Stephen Lynch (D-Mass.) said during the hearing that he was sad to see the committee stoop to the “lowest levels of partisanship and political theater to hold a hearing to go after the likes of Elmo and Cookie Monster and Arthur the Aardvark." current.org/2025/03/rep-...

Dozens more pregnant and postpartum women have died in Texas hospitals since the state banned abortion, our analysis shows. As the maternal mortality rate dropped nationally, it rose in Texas by 33%.

The National Institutes of Health will no longer be funding work on the health effects of climate change, according to internal records reviewed by ProPublica. By @anniewaldman.bsky.social and @fastlerner.bsky.social

They're called public records for a reason. Starting today, WIRED will *stop paywalling* articles that are primarily based on public records obtained through the Freedom of Information Act, becoming the first publication to partner with @freedom.press to offer this for our new coverage.

Independent Trans Media NEEDS YOUR HELP! Everyone loves to talk about supporting independent media these days, but the reality is that even small expenses are a major hurdle for little guys like us. Assigned Media and our friends @whatthetrans.com are raising $2500 to overhaul our websites.

If you’re looking to relocate to another state because of anti-LGBTQ+ laws, policies, and climate in your current state of residence, here’s an interest-free loan program that could help.

“Are things worse than they were before Stonewall? Not yet." I spoke with LGBTQ+ elders about what survival looks like under a hostile political regime and their advice for young people right now — which is namely, act even when you're afraid.

The best way to celebrate #SunshineWeek on National Freedom of Information Day is to learn how to use the Freedom of Information Act & then use the FOIA to request info from our government: FOIA.gov FOIA Comic by @washingtonpost.com @foianate.bsky.social via @sunshineweek.bsky.social #opengov

Stop pretending that the authoritarian repression is BECAUSE of the problems in {higher education, the media, the law, government, immigration policy, etc.}. This is what authoritarians do. If they didn't focus on these justifications, they'd come up with other ones.

My sweet boy is 14 now and with soft fur and all his teeth, the vet is always surprised how good he looks. Even if he does cost me a car payment monthly in insulin and prescription food and needles. So worth it. Look how much he loves his birthday toys!

Kayden Rodriguez, a transgender social work therapist, said trans people are scared and that fear leads to isolation — and that's why it's more important than ever for them to build community.

I’m on medical leave but a story I wrote before I left posted today. It’s a really good read on how to find and build communities for trans and nonbinary people - and practical, bulleted points for how to do so from two community organizers I’ve known for several years.

New report shows that NIH grants fueled $95 billion in economic activity and 407,782 jobs in 2024. That's not to mention the countless lives that biomedical research has saved. Show me a better investment than that. www.forbes.com/sites/michae...

I really appreciate all the follows these past few weeks. I’m on medical leave until at least the beginning of April but I’m excited to get back into the saddle at WUSF. I have all sorts of ideas for better ways to connect with and amplify the stories of folks in marginalized communities.

My USMC veteran father died by suicide. I have no doubt that this will contribute to the deaths of people who already are often difficult to get into therapy in the first place.

Seven years ago I donated a kidney to save my sister’s life. This week mine was saved by people who donate blood and plasma. I’m so, so grateful. Please donate if you can. I plan on donating again as soon as I’m healthy. You never know whose life you may end up saving.
