A Grant That Speaks Your Language We’re launching a new grant opportunity for researchers interested in studying language and linguistics on Gorilla! 📆 Applications open Monday 10th March Bring your studies to life 🔜 bit.ly/41DEgjp #openaccess #behaviouralscience

Today, a broad coalition of scientific professional societies who represent over 92,000 scientists are speaking out against the politicization and demonization of Federally funded science and government scientist jobs. It was an honor to help the Union of Concerned Scientists with this! 🧪🌎

On Nov. 7th, I told my sociolinguistics students this was going to happen. They did an activity on language policy and one of the lessons was that repressive regimes always try to criminalize languages that are not ideologically associated with nationalism. I’m sorry I was right.

This is terrible. Having no official language (with English de facto) at least left some room for other languages. Consequences can be horrific

Are you an international linguistics student studying in the U.S? Chilling observations. Thank you, @vkempe.bsky.social

On #InternationalMotherLanguageDay, I'm highlighting the 227 sign languages listed in Glottolog 5.1: glottolog.org/resource/lan... I'd also like to point out that many deaf children do not have access to their national/local deaf community sign language: this is a linguistic human rights emergency.

This administration has convinced half the country that the real problem isn’t billionaires who evade taxes and collect government handouts but the working class who pay taxes and get nothing in return.

We are pleased to announce a call for papers for the upcoming Sign CAFÉ 3 conference which will take place on Sept. 18–19, 2025 at the University of Warsaw. The deadline for the call for papers is March 31, 2025. For more information (in English and IS) please visit: sign.uw.edu.pl/en/sign-cafe...

Here's a very helpful post by Dick Aslin about indirect costs and the impact of the Project 2025 cap of 15% for these costs on NIH grants. As a current (and hopeful future) NIH grant-holder, this immediate incision in my funding will seriously impair research. dickaslin.substack.com/p/are-we-pay...

This is devastating for higher education and scientific research across the country. We are already facing severe budget problems and this robs universities of funds, potentially destroying critical research.

Interpretation for the non-scientists: When faculty get NIH grants, the University gets some extra cash to make sure the research is supported. NIH just cut that $$ by a LOT. That means Unis are less likely to support research. Most research in the US is done at Unis, so... it's bad 🧪

As the Trump administration & many state governments appear poised to accelerate attacks on higher education as a public good, the AAUP urges colleges & universities to resist the coming onslaught of political interference & defend the core values of higher education. 🧵 www.aaup.org/news/against...

Family ASL research project gave two presentations at ACE-DHH. When we get back we'll post the slides on slla.lab.uconn.edu/family-asl/

Heart goes out to those affected by the plane / helicopter crash in DC, particularly the young figure skaters. Every time I land at DCA I remember the crash in 1982. From now on I’ll have two crashes to remember. 🖤

To our many American friends. The National Academies have assembled a package of resources for researchers facing threats or attacks in the US www.nationalacademies.org/chr/resource...

Academic Skyers: I am compiling a list of policies and statements from various universities about how they are handling the "pause" in terms of stopping expenditures (or not). Please respond to this post with your institution and materials. THANK YOU!

The Child Language Symposium 2025 will be hosted by the University of Reading on September 8th-10th. Our call for papers is now open and will close on 28th February. Submit your abstract for a poster, an oral presentation, a symposium, or a lightening talk. Pls RT research.reading.ac.uk/cls2025/

To instrumentalize what my sister is saying below: every time someone says DEI say “you mean civil rights?” Every time someone says they are against woke reply “oh so you’re a segregationist!” Words have meaning! Don’t allow that nonsense to stand.

Hey, just me gesticulating wildly to let you know that Off the Grid is on the ground in LA ready to support deaf and disabled folks who need help due to the fires. Please share, or request help here: form.jotform.com/250125620244...

After joining (part of) the #TISLR15 livestream and seeing some pix on IG, I am feeling disappointed not to be there in person 😢 Hope the rest of the conference goes well for all attending in person and online!

Is anyone there? #TISLR15 Coffee break going longer than planned?

Language policies are always about social hierarchy. This argument is that ASL should not exist. It’s not only wildly discriminatory and linguistically misinformed, it’s also a call for the eradication of every language and variety except for whatever this guy thinks is “good English”.

The American Dialect Society Word of the Year: RAWDOG To rawdog: taking on life without the usual protection, preparation, or comfort. Whether it’s diving into a challenge unprepared or skipping the safety net, rawdogging is about embracing risk, stone-cold sobriety, and rolling with it. #LSA2025

Jessi doing a great job with the comments #WOTY24 @jessgrieser.bsky.social

Has anyone managed to make a payment to register for #TISLR15? Bank says it’s not permitted
