We’re starting to see different sentiments emerging though. I was proud of the signature style women developed since moving away from the 80s badassery. Both have merits but also different implications for injuries, parent support, youth participation, perceptions & marketability.

The PWHL hasn’t reached the 80s style of women’s full contact hitting & fighting yet (my prime) but they probably shouldn’t let it go that far. If profitability, fan support & healthy players are objectives that is.

So excited for this & judging from chatter, there’ll probably be generations of Edmonton Chimos in the house. Players from the barnstorming 1970s to the CWHL in the 2010s. We’ll all be watching our dreams unfold at Rogers Place today!

Welcome to Edmonton!! Special greetings to Carla MacLeod, Emerance Maschmeyer, Danielle Serdachny & Stephanie Markowski. Super excited to have them come home to the Edmonton region this way. Go Charge! 💪

Thanks, I love Carla MacLeod and will look for that! As an aside, I found out my teammate Sharon purchased two Charge season tickets last year just to support the team & travelled from Edmonton a few times to see games!

🙌 I’ve missed Ottawa since moving back west in 1990. That’s a big reason the Charge has been my team from the start! Excited to watch them live at Sunday’s #PWHL Takeover Tour game with some former Edmonton Chimos 🏆teammates. We are many—1970s to 2010s. BTW, Shirley Cameron for the 🇨🇦HHOF!! 🏒 🥅

The PWHL graphics and branding in the Takeover Tour arenas have been spectacular! 👏👏👏

Thanks for surfacing this piece of CWHL & women’s hockey lore. Really felt for her then but delighted she gets to experience the place in a much better way today 😊

Many think that women’s hockey has been no contact but it was always allowed in battling for the puck—hitting is new. As part of an earlier generation who played body checking, I’m watching the pendulum swing back with reservations. I hope the free flowing style of hockey that women developed stays.

Nothing yet but Ian Kennedy over @thehockeynewsw.bsky.social has asked the question & will probably be one of the first to break any news

It’ll definitely be interesting to find out what the PWHL’s reasons are!

See a lot of the same feelings as yours. I hope they’ve learned some things since NWHL & NWSL days. Broadcast quality expectations are much higher now 👍

Correction: Should have said “between Canada’s two women’s pro sports leagues” 😖
