I have never strapped a clay crocodile to my forehead but I absolutely understand how people came to believe that drilling a small hole in one’s skull could provide desperately needed relief.

My 5 bullet to-do list for next week -sell naming rights to all U.S. interstate highways -invade Costa Rica -Dissolve USPS, sell undelivered mail in bulk to highest bidder -arrange televised to-death cage match between loaned Chinese pandas and American grizzlies (and/or eagles?) -expense reports

I've been writing a series of essays for PBS on men whose style I admire. The latest is about James Baldwin, a man who knew how to sing through clothes. www.pbs.org/wnet/america...

English learners do quite a bit better in Texas K–12 schools than they do in California K–12 schools. Why? tcf.org/content/repo...

“Among the cancellations was an 11-year study of youths with disabilities … to identify which programs were effective ... More than 1,000 youths with disabilities were supposed to receive special instruction and support in 2025 and 2026 through this study, which has now been terminated.”

This is one of the funniest videos I've ever seen in my life

Heads up, New Yorkers.

Forcing buildings in NYC to keep trash cans like in the suburbs, but for without suburban yards to store them in and a thrice-weekly pickup schedule, seems to be leading a lot of them to just leave the bins out on the sidewalk semi-permanently

If I could wave a magic wand and improve one thing in education it would be teacher prep. This is heartbreaking and infuriating.

If you or someone you know has had a particular research project suspended by recent actions at IES, please get in touch either by DM or by replying here. There are journalists who'd like to report on this.

Education scholar friends: People don’t necessarily understand the value of education research in the same intuitive way they understand the value of research into cancer, etc. Drop examples of high-impact edu research in the thread below. #edusky apple.news/Atlzcr6jARYG...

🧵 If you’re applauding the abolishment of the Department of Education, you need to do a little research. You have ZERO clue what the DOE actually does. Here’s a reality check on what the Department of Education actually does: (1/14)

IES is the best federal research program I know. They strategically invest in the whole pipeline of research from description, to intervention design, to piloting & eval of promising designs, to scale up & eval of promising pilots, then dissemination & commercialization.

Hearing from a govt contractor that Dept of Education is terminating What Works Clearinghouse (WWC) contracts. WWC is a website that rigorously evaluates education policies, programs, and products to determine what's effective and not. It's an invaluable tool for school, district, state leaders
