Many American Catholic voices offer a very one-sided caricature of Catholic teaching on immigration: “Nations have a right to control their borders and illegal immigration is bad.” The full picture is far richer and more complex than that.

the competition is fierce but it feels like this might be one of the ten absolute dumbest things any president has ever said, or at least one of the ten dumbest things Trump has said this week

For some time now I’ve wanted to write an in-depth piece on immigration and deportation from the perspective of Catholic Social Teaching and moral theology. At last I’ve written this.

The opposite of Christ is not the devil. Christ is the Word Made Flesh, True God and True Man. The devil is just a fallen angel. The two aren’t comparable at all. The opposite of Christ, is Emperor. www.patheos.com/blogs/steelm...

one of the best possible perspectives on CONCLAVE, and one I couldn’t have provided

Illegal entry is a MISDEMEANOR. We are SENDING PEOPLE TO GITMO for a MISDEMEANOR.

What they sold to voters: “only the worst of the worst will be sent to Gitmo, gang members and violent offenders” What they are now saying: literally all undocumented immigrants, because they “broke our nation’s laws, and therefore they are criminals”

almost sounds like he’s saying “People who voted for Harris are the cancer, people that voted for Trump are the good tissue”

The Oscar-nominated documentary No Other Land still doesn't have distribution, but they've added a database of screenings nationwide to their website nootherland.com/buy-tickets I wrote about it here:

“President Plane Accident,” this source says. “Is that how Donald Trump wants to be remembered?"

as a political psychologist and a former student of the late Dr Jim Sidanius, I think of this phrase of St Augustine’s quite often

Measles high infection rate is the reason we have not yet been able to eradicate it. That rate means you need a very high vaccination rate to prevent outbreaks. It is possible, but not with current levels of institutional distrust.

basically assume every email you get could be an AI-based phishing attack, never type account data into a website accessed from a link in an unsolicited email

It would be a shame if more people saw this ad because WaPo refused to run it than if they'd just run it as planned. A crying shame.

Does anyone know which #SilentFilm this clip is from (seen in GODSPELL 1973), please? @moviessilently.bsky.social @silentlondon.bsky.social @silentbeauties.bsky.social @silentmoviegifs.bsky.social @theflyingeditor.bsky.social @neilkbrand.bsky.social @paulajoyce.bsky.social @lukemckernan.bsky.social

What was the first movie screened in the White House of the US president? The short answer is that we don't know exact titles but we do know some details. The year was 1908, the president was Roosevelt (Teddy) and the subject was birdlife of the Yorkshire dales.

poetry is not my thing but I felt like the world needed ONE MORE TAKE on “It might have been”

You are not supposed to live in a tent on a mountain, you’re supposed to live in Jesus. You cannot live on that mountain. Your life is not up there; it’s in Jesus. www.patheos.com/blogs/steelm...

for the first time in US history, national chaos and destruction hit escape velocity

I was literally this morning considering re-subscribing after canceling in the wake of the last-minute decision not endorse a candidate. Why does everything have to suck at the same time.

Doing your taxes? Do you want to send your personal data directly to Elon Musk? Or let the government take care of that for you?

Okay, so COBRA KAI finale complaint, SPOILER WARNING Did they *have* to follow the fight-sequence formula absolutely to the end? I.e., villain gets in hero’s head before the fight, hero loses at first until inspirational speech, etc? Like, WHAT IF JOHNNY JUST WALKED AWAY IN THE LOCKER ROOM?

the penultimate episode of Cobra Kai is SO BONKERS

I see lots of people predicting Trump turning against Musk. I doubt he’s capable of it. A weak man’s idea of a strong man, Trump is overawed by men like Putin and Musk whom he perceives as strong. Both men benefit from maintaining the pretense of partnership as long as possible.

I am in favor of watching Sense and Sensibility early in the year, after watching Die Hard at Christmas and *not* watching Love Actually *ever*, because Hans Gruber’s death doesn’t need to be comeuppance for anything else and I don’t want to irrationally want Elinor to cold-cock Colonel Brandon

NEW: The latest wave of lawsuits against DOGE targets Musk himself — claiming he’s amassed so much power that the Constitution requires Senate confirmation. It’s an argument similar to the one that Trump made against Jack Smith. www.politico.com/news/2025/02...

"Trump and Elon Musk are like two guys with six-shooters trying to hold a thousand people hostage. They only win if everyone thinks they are too strong to rush." www.hamiltonnolan.com/p/they-are-a...

As soon as you get to "That is not exactly correct," you totally brace for impact.

theology student to me, just now: “Deacon Steve, are you saying that, according to the Modalist heresy, the Father and the Son are like alter egos, like Peter Parker and Spider-Man?” okay how stupid do I feel for not thinking of that analogy myself

A perennial favorite St. Valentine’s Day comic strip, happy Valentine’s Day!

what interacting with Indian coworkers and Spanish parishioners taught me about how my tribe is perceived by others

I am grateful to have a new essay in @wherepeteris.com. Thanks to @mfjlewis.bsky.social for giving me the opportunity to tell "A Tale of Two Converts." One of them, Julia Greeley, is featured in my upcoming book from @loyolapress.bsky.social, The Sacred Heart. wherepeteris.com/a-tale-of-tw...

I was grateful to interview @mcastimovies.bsky.social about her role as Senior Film Programmer at Jacob Burns Film Center, one of the best arthouse theaters in the country. Read all about it/her! ryerecord.com/at-the-movie...

so Harrison Ford has played the US president twice, nearly 30 years apart, and both times within 4 years of the real president, do I have that right

I really wanted this movie to be good because so many of the worst people’s takeaway will now be “this is what happens if you try to have a Black Captain America” rather than “this is what happens when you make a shitty sequel to a 2008 Hulk movie nobody remembers”

Homeland Security Noem literally made this man her poster boy of “the worst of the worst” who are being sent to Gitmo. A father with no criminal record who made an appointment to claim asylum.

My first post to hit triple-digit likes! An in-depth analysis of a wonderful, wordless “Calvin & Hobbes” and why the last two panels pack an unexpected emotional punch

as a Newark deacon who was ordained under the towers in the background of this very photo, clearly I approve of this message (as does Suzanne, a local parks-conservancy member and plant expert)
