#NowListening to more fine Strauss from the NHK Symphony Orchestra under Paavo Järvi. The Fuji-esque cover art is a nice touch. Like previous issues in this series, RCA/Sony seem determined not to tell anyone outside Japan that they've released it.

Why not try #A-Haydn-A-Day? It could change your life!

The National Open Youth Orchestra kicked off their four-concert tour at Milton Court earlier today with a performance featuring young disabled and non-disabled musicians performing new music Kate Whitley, Liam Taylor-West, and Yfat Soul Zisso. blog.thoroughlygood.me/2025/04/27/r...

John Curtice notes on Today that mayoral races could be won with as little as 25% of the vote. But it's worse than that: if turnout in (eg) the West of England race is the same as in 2001 - 36% - a party might win with 9% of eligible votes. First Past the Post is an absurdity in these conditions.

I'm getting ahead on #A-Haydn-A-Day with the historic sound of the Pro Arte Quartet from the 1930s in Op. 20 No. 1. I've never listened to these vintage recordings before.

All six Op. 17 quartets are now on my playlist, in the same order @loveinner.bsky.social is serving them up on #A-Haydn-A-Day - 2, 1, 4, 6, 3, 5. I'm loving the Leipzigers in this set.

I cancelled Amazon a few months back (good riddance!). The only thing I missed was my BFI subscription, so today, I installed the BFI Player on my TV and we christened it by watching the delightful Paterson, which has made me feel a lot better about a lot of things.

Thoroughly enjoyed the Sterkel, especially the Mozartian piano concerto. God bless CPO!

#Ravel in London: a short thread. Ravel visited London for the first time in 1909, staying with Vaughan Williams at his Chelsea home, 13 Cheyne Walk 1/

Haydn string quartets. Making listeners curse with delight since around 1760.

If you do just one thing to push back against Amazon, make it buying your books elsewhere.

#NewReleaseFriday is late again, but it's my birthday today, so sampling the week's symphony and orchestral #NewReleases is like opening a bumper set of presents. First recordings of symphonies by one of my favourite #ContemporariesOfHaydn? Thanks, that's just what I wanted! ▶️ spoti.fi/400asdn

Some of the greatest music ever written. What a joy to have recorded it with the incomparable English Symphony Orchestra. Stream it: tidal.com/browse/album...

1. Because this issue is critical, but has received remarkably little coverage, here's a thread pulling out the key themes from my article yesterday, on the Planning and Infrastructure Bill, which puts decades of environmental protections to the torch. 🧵 www.theguardian.com/commentisfre...

Nick Robinson on the BBC asked why are the Green Party invisible? Perhaps it is because he and the BBC almost never invite them on their shows.

It's quite the page-turner, I agree.

Tomorrow, a certain online mega-retailer launches a book sale, just days before Indie Bookstore Day on 4/26. This is no coincidence; Bookstore Day is one of the largest revenue drivers for indies. Indies need our support to thrive & build community spaces for all...mega-retailers do not.

🚨 Important thread! Please share🚨 A vital research resource that many of us have used, the BBC Written Archives, is proposing to seriously restrict access to materials.
