A child has died in Texas from #measles, which is a vaccine preventable disease. Yet neither the HHS Secretary, nor his department, nor the #CDC has publicly urged parents of unvaccinated children to get their kids vaccinated. The silence is stunning. www.statnews.com/2025/02/27/t...

I’m very proud that the Morning Call, a local Lehigh Valley paper, published my op-ed on the risks of the Trump administration current actions to public health. “Here is a wise rule of thumb attributed to G.K. Chesterton: “Do not remove a fence until you know why it was put up in the first place.”

If there is indeed a multiverse, we must live in the stupidest timeline.

NIH indirects case update: Hearing ongoing now, and I'll try to live tweet some notable exchanges. Prior to more detailed arguments, Judge Kelley starts off with a few point questions to both sides: (I'm paraphrasing here)

Republicans too scared to vote their conscience have one other option to honorably avoid endorsing the death of US democracy - they should resign

I can't underscore this enough- Kennedy's word is worthless. He says whatever he needs to say to maximize the power he holds and he tells baldfaced lies without flinching (just look at his confirmation hearings). He actively ignores the evidence- it's been shown to him many times.

I have been getting a surprising number of questions about CIA's low-confidence announcement that they believe SARS-CoV-2 came from a lab. A few comments in 🧵, but to summarize: 1️⃣ No new intelligence 2️⃣ No new report 3️⃣ No evidence exist to support SARS-CoV-2 came from lab 4️⃣ Usual nonsense More 👇

Proposed bill to allow personal belief vaccination exemptions for university and community college students in Arizona. Public statements can be made in Capitol tomorrow at 1:30. We’ve seen enough legislation like this to know what will happen if it passes. www.azleg.gov/legtext/57le...

THREAD Things that didn't make the news that will likely change our lives for the better The news is not an accurate reflection of the world. Good news doesn't get reported as much. Here are the wonderful things researchers have achieved recently. 1/24

@katherinejwu.com getting straight to the ❤️ of the crisis. This current attack on science must be stopped to protect all Americans.

Just in case: @statnews.com has backed up and is monitoring #CDC 's data. www.statnews.com/2025/02/14/t...

The stated logic for NIH F&A cuts is that private foundations usually have far lower IDC rates. But these rates are based on donor preferences, not how much it actually costs to do the project. e.g. The New York Stem Cell Foundation, who funded my lab for 5yrs, provides 0% indirects.

This is the most relevant article to NIH and research cuts I’ve seen. Imagine if this was today , how many people would be saying “Why are we studying Gila Monsters and their impact on diabetes ? That’s wasted money !” globalnews.ca/news/9793403...

Thought it might be good to put some human faces on NIH indirects. We had an IT guy at Stanford who supported school of medicine even though he could have made way more at a tech company. Said both his parents died of cancer. Though not a researcher, this is the way he said he could help the mission

This is a list of blockbuster drugs in 2024. Guess how many can trace their origins to NIH funded research? All of them.

Get somebody in this room who knows that the word “transgenic” does not mean “transgendered”

A long post about what’s happening to the science funding agencies in the US and why. As mentioned, this one just kept getting longer even as I kept stripping curse words from it. www.science.org/content/blog...

1/ Super excited to see this work from Dr. Kei Haniuda in my lab come together - check it out! Kei was curious about how rotavirus-specific IgA responses are generated in the gut. He found that anti-RV specific plasma cells appear in the MLN and Peyer's Patches very quickly - faster than IgGs

I’d forgotten that the architects of the tariff policy were Ferris Buehler’s classmates. Explains a lot. www.youtube.com/watch?v=uhiC...

One thing that does not get enough attention I think in all these dialogues is the persistent attempt to dichotomize infectious diseases and chronic illnesses. - HPV and Hepatitis B are major causes of cancer. - Many viruses can trigger dilated cardiomyopathy in genetically susceptible people.

If you’ve been directly impacted by a pause or cancellation of an NIH study session, we @forbes.com would like to talk to you

Interested in how T cells are regulated in a tissue-specific manner? Karthik Varanasi’s exciting work shows Bile Acid synthesis impedes tumor-specific T cell responses during liver cancer @science.org Huge THANKS to all the amazing collaborators + @salkinstitute, SBP www.science.org/doi/10.1126/...

fascinated by a rhetorical strategy i see all the time now, which is making up an extreme edge case to argue against doing anything for the public good, and doing this from the putative left.

Much deeper dive than I did, but I’d love to hear whether @retractionwatch.com checked into the donors history and identified their clear axe to grind.

30% of liver cancers are caused by chronic hepatitis B infections. But guess what? Hepatitis B vaccinations can reduce liver cancer incidence by 72%. You prevent infectious disease AND cancer! RFK Jr: you can’t “pause” infectious diseases to focus on chronic disease. 1/

Questions for RFK Jr.’s Senate Confirmation: Part I open.substack.com/pub/pauloffi...

So, you may ask, why do I get so angry about the new liberal spin on RFK Jr, as in, "he gets some things right, so let's collaborate on those" or "we have to work with him because he has a huge following we need to reach"? Because I've seen this movie before. 1/

Ever wonder about the basis for fear-mongering & conspiracy theories about mRNA vax? Wish you had a place to go when someone cites "proof"? I've got you covered! In my latest @plos.org I buckle up for the waves of anti-vax muck likely to come in 2025. 1/2 absolutelymaybe.plos.org/2024/12/28/g...

I’m pleased to share that we FINALLY submitted our latest manuscript on SARS-CoV-2 cryptic lineages and what they tell us about the origins of COVID-19. This was a ton of work. medrxiv.org/cgi/content/... 1/

RFK & the antivaccine movement claim there are no placebo controlled trial vaccines. So let's talk about the @marchofdimes.bsky.social Francis Field trials for polio. In 1954, 2 concurrent trials were initiated, enrolling 1.8 million children. This was the largest clinical trial ever done.

Interesting review by Russell Vance "The major difference, for which we lack a satisfying explanation, is that innate immunity is able to sterilize a dose of 10^6 Legionella within a few days, whereas innate immunity fails to eliminate even a single bacillus of Mtb" #ImmunoSky

I'm seeing some (entirely justified) concern about the possibility of the US no longer having a polio vaccination program given the threat posed by the incoming administration and I feel like this is a really good opportunity to explain some things about polio to clarify what the risks are 🧵

🧪👩‍🔬🧠🦠

Chart of the night. In 1952, there were nearly 58,000 cases of paralytic polio in the US. In 2023, there were 0. As @meganranney.bsky.social said on CNN tonight, revoking the polio vaccine would result in generations of kids experiencing disability and death. graphics.wsj.com/infectious-d...
