I did some of this years ago in the local fishwrap. I submitted cold and made no money, but an excellent editor there made me better at the format. If I knew how to get paid, I'd do it more.

It's crazy to those of us of a certain age. When my best friend moved from Virginia to Tennessee in the early 80s we got to call for like 20 minutes on Sunday evening alternating weeks because of the long-distance charges. Or when my mom worked across Hampton Roads Harbor from where we lived.
