Aasdfsdghdyjft, I just realized Ars Technica is going to get shut down for this kind of thing.
It's sad, I've read them since I started my first (real) job as an electronics tech.

In his book RFK acknowledges the existence of germs but doesn't think they cause disease. It's just like arguing CO2 is real but doesn't cause climate change, or mutations are real but don't cause speciation.
This seems exactly like what liberals keep warning about.

Okay, but he's an anti-vaxxer. Did people forget that anti-vaxxers are nuts?
This is the same political party that backs parallel school systems where they teach that evolution is a conspiracy theory. The details may vary but it's the same principle.

This seems to be common with relatively informed people so I'm trying not to be dismissive, but why is an anti-vaxxer not believing in basic medical science a surprise?

I'm used to boxes full of digital signals with a couple power wires. There must be a lot of current going through that!

The prediction markets I've seen on this require federal agencies to *declare* a recession, which I why I haven't taken the bet.

I remember when it was all cypherpunks, it was cool back then. Now the scammers outnumber them 10 to 1 and I won't go anywhere near most of the community.

I really hope so but I’m worried dems will just keep pandering to them for no reason.

“elect clown car republicans while being heavily dependent on government services” is a recipe for disaster on its own terms, and the patience of dems to bail them out is now totally used up

So, uh, I can't help but notice this in your profile:
"2025 SPECIAL OFFER: Looking to cut back on social media. If you see me do anything here in 2025 from February through November, DM me and you might get a GlobalGiving donation/gift card"
How's it going?

Worth pointing out that a lot of that feedback is due to people hedging against a crash. If a crash is uncertain panic can lock it in, but once a crash is *already* certain panic mainly helps people prepare.

From where I am, it looks like mainstream liberals outnumber the psychos like these at *least* 10 to 1. Do you think that's changing?

After seeing a few of these comment thread I'm seriously wondering if these people are worse than NIMBYs.

Idk how I managed to not meet these weirdo leftists before despite being in lots of left-leaning social circles.

there's no such thing as bug-free, non-fucked-up editing software but at least if you're airgapped you will eventually learn what all the bugs in that version are and how to work around them, vs keeping up with every update where there's just a ton of new bugs all the time bsky.app/profile/warr...

...so in summary, a blog attracted a lot of armchair philosophers, they spent a lot of time talking to each other, a bunch of them now have very esoteric beliefs that only make sense to each other.

At some point they became displeased with Reddit's moderation policies and built their own forum site: www.themotte.org . They still have a regular "culture war roundup".
comment in response to

But they were not really contained. Tensions continued, eventually the culture warriors split off to a new subreddit: www.reddit.com/r/TheMotte/
They marinated in their culture war echo chamber, developing a quirky Trumpy-but-not-like-the-weird-redneck-Trumpists culture.

Within this community there are subfactions. On the subreddit, one subfaction focused on culture war issues. They REALLY liked SA's posts about IQ, and especially if race was involved. They were 'contained' to a culture war thread and mods told people to keep the culture war in the dedicated thread.

There's a community around it with a lot of overlap with the Lesswrong/rationalist community. There's a dedicated subreddit that's been reasonably active for a long time: www.reddit.com/r/slatestarc...

Having spent way too much time following rationalist drama (my guilty entertainment), I can give you some detail on the cult formation going on there.
SA writes a blog at slatestarcodex.com that's famous with tech types. It's wide-ranging with some interesting if verbose thoughts on many things.

A few months ago it was conventional wisdom that Musk and Trump would eventually have an explosive fight and spectular breakup. Tarriffing Tesla into the ground seems as good a trigger as any.
