It is acceptable for travel. But it doesn't prove citizenship, only identity. That's why green card holders can get them.

The biggest confusion I've seen is people thinking Real ID proves citizenship when it doesn't. And it can't be used for voter registration. But, I don't get the panic, if you're not planning air travel in the near future what's the hurry. πŸ€”

The star proves identity not citizenship. But good news for Ohio, they are going to offer enhanced driver's licenses that do prove citizenship. Only 5 states currently have enhanced licenses.
