Nothing says “I love you” to the working class like ending their health care coverage.

Folks have been talking about how unhinged their con law classes have been the past three weeks and I’m over here trying to figure out how to articulate the dismantling of our federal healthcare and disease control/prevention systems to graduate students in my class on infectious disease dynamics…

This new administration is making the US more and more vulnerable each and every day all to save a buck.

Whatever vaccines you have been procrastinating to get, get them now.

Project 2025 was unpopular because of things like the plan for Trump to shut down the CFPB, which helps you get your money back if a bank cheats you.

MAGA rn: Diversity: “Boooo bad, only strict qualifications (as defined by me) matter!!!” Loyalty: “Yes, perfect, this was in fact the only qualification I cared about.”

You are not powerless, and he is not unstoppable. Look at, and learn from, the funding freeze and how quickly he was forced to surrender.

Ooo this is a good one ☺️

Not a bad day to start following state and local health departments on bluesky go.bsky.app/5RKapGo

The CDC has removed data on sexual orientation, gender identity, and health disparities from their website. Pages removed include: - Youth Risk Behavioral Surveillance System - Social Vulnerability Index - Efforts to Address Racism as a Fundamental Driver of Health Disparities

Anyone else more nervous than usual about flying to academic conferences given the recent history of Boeing crashes, changes to the TSA and FAA, and now the tragedy in DC? #academicsky

RFK Jr. wants to get rid of 600 employees at NIH "not doing their jobs." What does that even mean? It means the people working on infectious disease research, lifesaving drug development, and vaccine research.

Sometimes I just love "THE BERN"

I think some people hear “grants” and think that without them, scientists and government workers just have less stuff to play with at work. But grants fund salaries for students, academics, researchers, and people who work in all areas of public service. “Pausing” grants means people don’t eat.

Students deserve to learn in safe environments where they can make mistakes and learn from them. Not where if they don’t dodge a gunman they die. Not where ICE agents can come and snatch them away. Something needs to change. Now. #academicsky

My R1 university wasn’t able to reach a price agreement with Elsevier about maintaining access to peer-reviewed journals, so we lost access to 1,665 of them. #academicsky

🔴 MAPPED: Donald Trump’s Transatlantic Anti-Green Network Politicians, donors, think tanks, and media outlets in the UK and U.S. are working increasingly closely to scupper climate policies and promote fossil fuel extraction. 📝 @adambarnett.bsky.social

On this day of national disgrace, I will limit myself to a single comment: I stand with the transgender community. ❤️

If there is anything that I’ve learned from the temporary RedNote migration, it’s that billionaires and millionaires HAVE to pay their FAIR share of taxes if we are ever going to make meaningful progress towards equity beyond what we have managed to achieve within the last century. #tiktokrefugee

Just so we are clear, the last TikTok video that I will probably ever watch was of a kindergarten teacher using M&Ms to explain that skin color doesn’t matter. That it is what’s on the inside that matters. But yes, clearly that was China trying to brainwash me. #tiktokrefugee

App banning is the new book burning

I think the Founding Fathers of the United States of America would be proud of the pure pettiness underlying the mass migration to RedBook/RedNote. But also, as an anthropologist, I am living for the intercultural communication happening on that app right now.

Pete Hegseth is attacking mainstream media right now. The Trump Administration is about to launch one of the most unprecedented attacks on our media. As an independent media source, I will never back down. Subscribe for free to my newsletter today: aaronparnas.substack.com

newskies, some culture notes: don't be a jerk don't quote-skeet to dunk on ppl don't do stuff for clout / clicks don't argue with dinguses, just mute/block/report (this is NOT a nazi bar) amplify good folks cheer ppl on we're glad to cheer you & your work on you are not a brand be a human being

What an achievement vaccines are. What a monument to our love for each other it is to stare straight into the face of something as horrific and unstoppable as smallpox or measles or polio or cervical cancer and say “You know what, it doesn’t have to be like this.” HUMANS!

Hi there! I’m an assistant professor of anthropology at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas. I model health and disease in archaeological populations and provide forensic anthropology consultation services. I anticipate that the bulk of my engagement will be with #academicsky

New research laboratory website is live. Check it out! humanhealthandskeletalbiologylab.sites.unlv.edu

Excited to announce that I will be joining the faculty at UNLV in July as an Assistant Professor in the Department of Anthropology! I will be directing research through the new Human Health and Skeletal Biology Lab focused on exploring health in marginalized groups through time.

New article out! onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1002/...

Big thanks to @dryaussy.bsky.social for giving a guest lecture on famine, climate change, and medieval plague in my Plagues and Peoples course. The students had a blast!!

Last week, the students in my course, Bodies of Evidence: The Science of CSI, completed their final activity, a mock crime scene recovery. They worked in teams to assess, document, and recover (plastic) human remains. I had a blast working with them this semester. Onto Forensic Anth in the spring!

Big thanks to Dr. Becca George for talking to my UTC students about dental anthropology and forensic science!

Had a fantastic time at the Mountain, Swamp, and Beach Regional Forensic Anthropology Conference with my students last weekend. We heard several great talks about current research in forensic anthropology in the southeast!

My undergraduates had a blast in my class, Bodies of Evidence: The Science of CSI, this morning. Can you say arterial spurt?

Finally found a use for these postcards of old anatomical illustrations I got from the Getty Museum in LA last summer. Did you know that they have a collection of old medical illustrations from the 18th-19th centuries?? Excited to integrate these documents into my future teaching and research!

Hi there! I am a queer biological anthropologist and full-time lecturer at the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga specializing in bioarchaeology and forensic anthropology. I integrate skeletal and archival data to examine health among marginalized groups through time.
