SCOOP: DOGE wants to rebuild SSA's codebase in months, risking benefits and system collapse, sources tell me. The plan is to migrate all systems off COBOL quickly which would likely require the use of generative AI. www.wired.com/story/doge-r...

I’m not going to share the Noem video. But it is a case study in the sort of dehumanization and bigotry that has led to even worse horrors throughout history. We should all be ashamed that this is being done in our name.

NEW: @motherjones.com reports that one of the men renditioned to El Salvador is Neri Alvarado, who was working in Dallas as a baker. An ICE agent told him they were questioning all men with tattoos. Neri has an AUTISM AWARENESS TATTOO in honor of his 15-year-old brother with autism.

Amazing to see @rajakorman.bsky.social’s art graduating from the fridge door to the pages of the FT. If Pozsar is the Pollock of flow, Karthik is the Kandinsky of currencies. Rates, credit, and the ‘How Screwed Are You’ diagram www.ft.com/content/231f...

The city has authorized just 600 restaurants or bars to set up curbside when roadway outdoor dining resumes April 1 — a nearly 90% drop from the height of the pandemic-era program, thanks to new rules pushed by Council Speaker Adrienne Adams.

Again:

every college, corporate, and nonprofit president right now

If it was any more obvious, you'd be able to see it from space.

Baseball media: if you do not loudly report on this I do not want to hear a goddamn thing from you about Jackie Robinson on April 15. bsky.app/profile/fbih...

NEBRASKA CROWD: “TAX THE RICH! TAX THE RICH!” @USRepMikeFlood: “So your proposal to solve (the debt) is tax the rich?” NEBRASKA CROWD: *CHEERS WILDLY* (not sure this went quite as he planned 😬)

A US-born citizen was walking near Chicago in January. ICE snatched him off the street, handcuffed him, threw into a van. His wallet, which contained his ID, was confiscated. He was detained for 10 hours before being released without a record of what occurred. immigrantjustice.org/sites/defaul...

Georges Méliès in 1905: "A charming little fruit stand. Sure would be a shame if anything happened to it. Yes, indeed." And that is how the most iconic scene in all of cinema was born. No fruit stand has been safe ever since.

Between Filipe and Elliot Cohen, profs coming out strong against this bullshit…

Regardless of what the sommeliers of constitutional crises might say, this is scary on a whole nother level. If they get away with this kind of argument, we’re closer to straight-up dictatorship than I ever thought possible.

Time to repost my 2024 article on the prisons of El Salvador under the current State of Exception. www.elsalvadorperspectives.com/2024/03/the-...

all the forces of NY corruption are lining up behind Cuomo (which is why the media is promoting the lie that it's a two-person race between Cuomo and dead-in-the-water Adams)

America hasn’t felt this upside down since I was a child in an internment camp.

Wish neither of us had to do this work, but it was a nice surprise to hear my friend Shawn VanDiver of @afghanevac.bsky.social on CBS News talking about his crucial work with Afghan refugees, before my segment on countering antisemitism & protecting democracy. podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/c...

This is the point I keep explaining to people outside of DC that really makes their jaws drop.

A second Columbia student has been detained by ICE. Leqaa Kordia is a Palestinian from the West Bank.

It's pretty wild to see what the Tesla Takedown people have built from nothing, totally organically in just two months. actionnetwork.org/event_campai...

With gratitude to @ddayen.bsky.social for the idea, a tribute to Kevin Drum from a fellow blogger and pet owner. www.offmessage.net/p/friday-cat...

True at the same time: the attack on Columbia is an escalation toward full-blown Orbán- Erdogan autocracy and destruction of the autonomy of associations & civil society, and the mechanism of micromanaging universities through federal funding has been building for a long time across administrations.

Remembering Kirk Alyn - the first actor to play Superman - who passed away 26 years ago today. (b. 8 October 1910 - d. 14 March 1999, age 88).

@schumer.senate.gov If you vote for cloture you are a stain on this country’s history that will never go away. You are willingly passing power to a tyrant in waiting, and you are a disgrace to every oath of office any senator has ever sworn. Your legacy will be one of cowardice and contempt.

They're going to fucking wreck the university with one of the best hospital systems in the goddam world

posting this here because I imagine it will get a lot of use for the next 4-8 years.

“There is something very powerful about utilizing the creative & expressive arts to begin to get at something very painful & very raw indirectly,” said Prof @michelle-munson.bsky.social. She was a panelist at NYU Grey Art Museum’s screening of three animated shorts on personal childhood trauma.

A crowd has gathered for the NYC protest against the illegal ICE arrest of Columbia grad student Mahmoud Khalil. Protesters are chanting and calling for his immediate release. Multiple helicopters overhead.

As far as I can tell, Khalil has still not been charged & his attorney/family still don’t know where he is. Any Jew who thinks this is going to start and stop with a few Palestinian activists is fooling themselves. Our community should not be used as an excuse to upend democracy & the rule of law.

Anyone in search of Jewish organizations and activists *actually* interested in combating antisemitism and keeping Jews safe should follow Amy and @thejcpa.bsky.social.

Knight Institute Says Threats to Deport Student Protesters Pose “Existential Threat” to Universities Statement from @jameeljaffer.bsky.social below and at link. knightcolumbia.org/content/knig...

We need to speak up to defend Khalil because this case is facially wrong on the merits and we need to make it clear that any hope this admin has of having any sort of peace at home *decreases* if they start trying to deport the "troublemakers".

Today’s events are perfect example of why no one should by the “noble Rubio pushing back from within” PR we’re being fed. He’s a willing participant in the amorality and illegality of the Trump admin

The Trump admin is exploiting real concerns about antisemitism to undercut democracy: from gutting education funding to deporting students to attacking diversity, equity, & inclusion. As we’ve repeatedly said: this makes Jews - & so many others - less safe. jewishpublicaffairs.org/news/jcpa-re...

Women have played a central role in the tea industry for centuries. From those who pluck in the fields to the ones who run estates, we couldn't bring you the world's best tea without them. In celebration of International Women’s Day, here's an appreciation thread! 🧵

All the pundits spending time on Dems’ message on trans sports could maybe use a little of their power and platform to talk about how vile this is.

There must be accountability for schools that fail to protect their students from antisemitism or other discrimination. But canceling hundreds of millions in health & human services and other grants is not about countering antisemitism — it’s about gutting education. www.nytimes.com/2025/03/07/n...

I’m gonna disagree. Dems should say: “You know damn well Republicans don’t care about women’s sports. And you know they get arrested every single day for preying on kids. No wonder they make laws where they get to look in your kid’s pants. They wanted to make a child predator Attorney General.” …
