1/? OK, so first rec is this - it's essentially a mini drafting app that is pwyc and does all sorts of rewards/stimulation for writing. I use it for my early drafting all the time thatclowngoddess.itch.io/stimuwrite

So, to meet $2k in savings in West Virginia (which has a minimum wage higher than federal at $8.25/hr), you have to make around $14k per year and save up for about 6 months. If you want a *decent* safety net, you need to save for 14 months. And you can’t miss work or spend on any nonessentials.

Another oft-recommend piece of financial advice is the 50-30-20 rule - 50% on needs, 30% on wants, 20% on savings and debt. If you follow this advice, and assuming no “wants” and no debt, you need to make $14.54/hr *at minimum*, which leaves $327 for savings. It will take 14 months to reach $4875.

Now, if you’re following good financial advice, you should have at least three months of living expenses in savings for emergencies - so $2k isn’t enough anywhere in the US. For our single person in Arkansas, they need at least $4875. That’s a lot of money for someone on minimum wage.

If you worked an extra 20 hours of overtime at the federal minimum wage, you still would not have enough ($1520) to meet your monthly expenses. With no overtime and no missed hours, you would need to make $11.86 per hour for your take-home pay to meet your expenses.

Besides, $2k in savings is a) very hard to achieve and b) not enough by far.
For example, a single person living in West Virginia can expect (at minimum) about $1625 in monthly expenses. The full-time take-home pay at the federal minimum wage ($7.25/hr, 160 hours per month) is $1160.

I read that thread. If that person truly has lawyers in their family, they obviously didn’t absorb any legal education secondhand.
Seriously, I get how worried people are about Trump and the rule of law, but we’re a *very* long way from him being able to get away with pardoning state crimes.

this points out something even funnier; Trump expected either a huge fawning crowd or a huge gathering of protestors he could threaten with force. he got neither. he got a boring ass hot day where nothing happened. it’s fucking amazing.

RFK, Jr. isn’t some harmless goofball saying silly things. He’s doing real harm to real people, and we have historical precedent for where it can end. Don’t play down what he says like he’s unaware of the facts he chooses to ignore. Treat his unhinged nonsense with the seriousness it deserves.

Remember what Lysenkoism did to the world. In the Stalinist USSR, 30 million people starved to death. A couple of decades later between 15 and 50 million people died in the Great Chinese Famine. People with the power to shape public policy to pseudoscience are dangerous and deadly.

all of your data.
Instead, take your AC charger and use the AC outlet, not the USB one.
If you travel regularly and/or have a laptop and don't want to take up two AC outlets, then invest in a USB data blocker, colloquially called a USB condom. What this handy little thing does is block data

In my defense, it’s a very large, multi-book technical writing project, but still, between ADHD and … <gestures broadly>
I just can’t seem to get started.

The US - and to a lesser extent, Canada - are suffering from the extended effects of two-party capture of their political systems. The US has a much more advanced case than most places. Black-and-white thinking about political issues, like who is on which side, is one of the most noticeable signs.

What we call Left and Right in politics originates from seating arrangements in the French Third Republic legislature.
Yes, seriously.
It was a spectrum from the start, too. The two-party form of the system is comparatively rare and is a worst-case outcome of first-past-the-post election systems.
