Some folks write the families they wish they had so hard that it stops reading like a mirror to reality. I cant fault the impulse, but I dont particularly wanna read it either.

Yeah it does a *much* better job of showing the internality of that perspective change. Its also WAY more obvious in the books that there's sometimes 20 to 50 YEARS in between events, as opposed to a few weeks in the show
...but the books dont have shoreh agdashloo and so we forgive the show

...Holden isn't *that* much less annoying in the books, but people at least call him out about it instead of it being up his bootyhole like in the show

While it deals more with family of origin, I've got to shout out the book series that got me really reading fiction again after burning out in grad school: Jaran by @kateelliottsff.bsky.social
Its fun. Its weird. Its philosophical. Its got hot space cossacks and xenolinguists. You should read it.

They were monster hunters first and broke as a fuckin joke second so when the meatpacking plant closed down they snapped up some of the old equipment. Its not a business so much as their own food supply

Yeah, they're monster hunters in a universe where the vampires don't politely turn to dust. Werewolves always leave corpses, wolf bodies just get DNR up your ass as well as regular cops.
...actually Thomas's introductory scene is killing a mage and cutting him up for disposal. It's the Owens way!

...I should note that they're obsessive about keeping their processing area super clean. They dont have health insurance, they cant afford to get sick from failing to clean the bone grinder after that mage went thru it. Health and safety regs exist for a reason! Even the Owens clan knows it!

But the flash fiction contest has been ongoing for what, 12 years now? And those folks are... well many have also been assholes but most of them are very good writers!

Its very much his need for things to happen His Way, which ive often seen in tension with the better natures of people who are community leaders, that causes him to kick off a massive supernatural shootout in a commercial shipyard
