The GOP and conservatives just pretend the Southern Strategy didn't happen. The very idea of a white Southerner who will die before he votes for the "party of Lincoln" has been forgotten, though I met many of those people when I was young. The "up is down" started decades ago.

“ Courted “ is a euphemism here for being assailed and strong armed like, I don’t know, a sexual predator.

put a little differently, trump is creating a clear hierarchy of states based on nothing other than his arbitrary political preferences. some states, and thus some citizens, will be disadvantaged for no other reason than that the president does not like they don't obey his will.

I really fail to grasp why "bad thing bad" is a controversial thing to say.

Seeking to understand your subject is a good thing. Simply regurgitating their side of the story isn’t.

Apparently they aren't as turned off by the Federalist as they are made out to be.

also, with love, I think people ascribe too much power to headlines. I see this discourse that seems to assume that, if the headline was different, it would somehow be a KO to make the subject of the story act different? but when subjects call to complain about a story, it's almost always a detail.

mostly I think we just want you to read past the headline and into all the stuff we care the most about — the details!

I think readers get frustrated with headlines for the same reasons writers do — a lot of nuance just gets cooked out. when there’s backlash, you’ll see writers say, “I didn’t write it." but we have the opportunity to weigh in and pull the e-brake if we hate it, so it’s kinda a cop-out.
