When a chatbot gets something wrong, it’s not because it made an error. It’s because on that roll of the dice, it happened to string together a group of words that, when read by a human, represents something false. But it was working entirely as designed. It was supposed to make a sentence & it did.

Kapterian: "This recount has created a different result." No shit, Einstein. Someone needs to explain to her what happens in a recount. Most notably, the formality of every vote is carefully reviewed; this inevitably causes a handful of edge-cases to change from formal to informal, and vice versa.

Yes, taxing unrealised capital gains is generally bad in principle. But in the context of this proposal the impact is utterly neglible. And if a rich person is concerned about it they could just not keep more than $3m in superannuation; no-one is making them!

But … maybe she meant the number of people in electorates with a National Party MP? No, that’s less than 3 million, so still a lie.

The most hilarious part of this is the notion that under Dutton the coalition had somehow “gone Left”.

I have sometimes got transformative results with just detergent and water, and sometimes not. So in the latter case I naturally always wonder is it groove damage, or is there more dirt in the grooves that I could get out with a different cleaning system.

Thanks, that explains why I could only find “Vinyl Revival” a hi-fi store in Melbourne.

Ya know, the Caterpillar never pays for any of the food it eats, and it does transition, so you may have a point 🤔

It’s not useless (counterexample: @cnn.com) but it is not sufficient, hence why Bluesky is adding a direct verification system as well. And as for @cloudfare.social, either it is an imposter account, or Cloudflare have chosen a really dumb domain handle.

The problem is that current “AI” (i.e., large language models) aren’t sources, they are just text generators. They produce very impressively fluent text, but any actual facts in their output are purely incidental.

...Hence the only way nuclear could ever be built is if successive Australian governments all pig-headedly wasted taxpayer money on building the pointless nuclear plants for 20 to 30 years. And yet many people (especially in the media) treated this as a plausible scenario worthy of discussion!
comment in response to post
Baseload generation used to be an advantage of nuclear. It is now a liability, as baseload disappears due to the unstoppable growth of renewables. What the grid now needs is dispatchable power to firm renewables. Nuclear can't do this, which makes it even more un-competitive than it already was.

2/ And the Greens have decent, human policies on health, education, housing, on not spending every dollar on defence, on taxing corporations and billionaires. They will hold a Labor government to account. Macnamara is a Labor or Greens seat. You can safely vote Labor 2. Let’s do this. #AusPol

The most amusing part is that folk etymology could read "badassière" as a portmanteau of "badass" and (somewhat redundantly) "derrière".

How come it's not okay for the Greens to dance on ANZAC Day but it's fine to play footie? Shouldn't we all be wearing sack cloth and covering ourselves in ashes? www.abc.net.au/news/2025-04...

… each sealed element is floated into position and then lowered to the sea floor. But despite weighing 73000 tonnes it is apparently “incredible” that it can float! Wait until this journalist hears about ocean liners, supertankers, and Archimedes. It will blow their mind!

Fascinating project, but the article contains a couple of howlers that make me wonder if the BBC has any editorial oversight …

Now we are at the crunch point. If the regime defies this order than contempt proceedings could start immediately (no possibility of more word games like “what does ‘facilitate’ mean”).
comment in response to post
It is indeed an astonishing order for those 4 reasons. Up till now the court has treated the Presidency with respect (to maintain decorum, and/or support Trump). My take is that the majority have now reached a tipping point; no more benefit of the doubt for a lawless bad-faith regime.

Diane has not grasped either the literal or metaphorical meaning of “shot in the foot”.

Ian, you’ve put your finger on the problem. Their MPs are dishonest, nasty, and stupid, which has created a death-spiral of terminal incompetence. The only exception I can think of is Bridget Archer; she has given herself the heroic (or foolhardy) task of bringing some integrity back to the Liberals
