I spoke to @sarahsbrannen.bsky.social, author of Uncle Bobby's Wedding, about Justice Alito butchering the message of her book during oral arguments—a distortion that inadvertently revealed the justice's own paranoid homophobia, a bigotry at the heart of this rotten case. slate.com/news-and-pol...

Lady being interviewed on the podcast I'm listening to just said "It sounds like I'm doing a lot, but I feel like I'm not doing enough." Interviewer: "Compared to who?" Interviewee: "Compared to the person I feel like I'm supposed to be" ...I feel this in my damn bones

Jake Tapper: "One 60 Minutes source tells me, 'The lawsuit was baseless. Bill Owens wouldn't apologize. He wouldn't bend. He fought for the broadcast and for independent journalism and that cost him his job. It's shameful.'"

BREAKING: we won! A federal judge has enjoined the administration's shut down of Voice of America Another success for the Constitution and for us @sddaction.bsky.social & our many wonderful partners & clients More details to follow--stay tuned!

"Federal agencies would be instructed to take steps to train students in using AI...The agencies would also be asked to partner with the private sector...All educators should undergo professional development to integrate AI into all subject areas, the draft order says."

"This case involves the Government’s efforts to use the withholding of federal funding as leverage to gain control of academic decisionmaking at Harvard... The Government’s actions flout not just the First Amendment, but also federal laws and regulations."

Judge Xinis ordered the Trump administration to report on Mr. Abrego Garcia's whereabouts beginning on April 10. This filing suggests that the admin didn't ask El Salvador his location until April 20, explaining why previous declarations presented info we know now to be false.

"We cannot give everyone a trial," says the president of these United States.

once again, members of Congress are held to a lower standard than we hold volunteer neighborhood board members and we should really figure out how that happened

El Salvador President Nayib Bukele proposed carrying out a prisoner swap with Venezuela on Sunday. Bukele suggested he would exchange Venezuelan deportees from the United States that his government has kept imprisoned for what he called “political prisoners”.

“The Pentagon is in ‘total chaos’ and Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth is unlikely to remain in his role, according to its former top spokesperson, who painted a scene of dysfunction, backstabbing and continuous missteps at the highest levels of the department.”

Breaking News: Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth is said to have shared detailed information about forthcoming strikes in Yemen on March 15 in a private Signal group chat that included his wife, brother and personal lawyer.

I've been shown what purports to be a draft version of a soon to be released Executive Order reorganizing the State Dept. The chain of custody is a bit indirect and it's important to be clear that there can be many versions of such orders circulating and they can be subject to subsequent edits etc.

Your friendly reminder that it is literally a federal felony punishable by up to five years in prison for the President, Vice President, or any employee of the White House to directly or indirectly ask the IRS to open an investigation into any specific taxpayer.

Mis/disinformation research officially cancelled. Understanding the creation, content, distribution, and susceptibility is one of today’s key scientific and societal challenges. Researching this is not free speech infringement. Such a claim is intentionally misleading. www.nsf.gov/updates-on-p...

Can confirm that my NSF grant "How False Beliefs Form & How to Correct Them" was cancelled today because it is "not in alignment with current NSF priorities" Shocking that understanding how people are misled by false information is now a forbidden topic. Our work will continue but at a smaller scale

This statement from the NSF is insane. Science is, in essence, designed to separate the true from the false. Understanding how falsehoods spread is key to the scientific endeavor. It is not a violation of free speech to be proven wrong.

Victory! Court order suspending yesterday's attempted reduction in force of about 90% of the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau

I don't really care what the "political consequences" are of fighting for the proposition that *everyone* is entitled to due process before they are removed from the United States and sent to a Salvadoran prison. It's not really a principle if you only adhere to it when it's politically expedient.

NEW: The Fourth Circuit REJECTS the Trump admin's appeal of Judge Xinis's orders to "facilitate" Kilmar Abrego Garcia's release: "We shall not micromanage the efforts of a fine district judge attempting to implement the Supreme Court's recent decision." storage.courtlistener.com/recap/gov.us...

Thirty-eight of 43 experts cut last month from the boards that review the science and research that happens in laboratories at the National Institutes of Health are female, Black or Hispanic, according to an analysis by the chairs of a dozen of the boards.

The student paper at the college at which I teach reports a "tsunami of takedown requests" from international students terrified of being targeted for innocuous, legitimate op-eds & opinions.. Many ask in person--leave no trace in writing. Reminds me of my father's account of studying in the USSR.

Hearing the same from a direct source. People in Americorps being told they're done. It's over. No notice.

“They’re not really using AI, they’re not really driving efficiency. What they’re doing is smashing everything,” the former official said. www.politico.com/news/2025/04...

The Trump administration has said why it's seeking to deport a Columbia student who is a legal permanent U.S. resident: because his activities could “potentially undermine” the Middle East peace process, a memo from Secretary of State Marco Rubio that was reviewed by The New York Times shows.

We already know of over 1,000 student visa terminations. The true number is likely significantly higher. Very few have anything to do with pro-Palestinian advocacy. The overwhelming majority seem to be the result of automated terminations for any contact with law enforcement, no matter how minor.

1. This new statement is signed by the Union for Reform Judaism — the largest Jewish denomination in the U.S. — and the Religious Action Center of Reform Judaism, National Council of Jewish Women, American Conference of Cantors, Central Conference of American Rabbis, HIAS…

The DOJ lawyer who made the mistake of answering the court's questions about Abrego-Garcia candidly (eg yes he was mistakenly deported, a fact the Administration already has acknowledged), which got him put on administrative leave, has now been fired, ending his 15-year DOJ career..

New from me at Cato: with yesterday's developments in the Abrego Garcia case, it becomes clear that Donald Trump aims to create an offshore zone in which persons of his choosing can be whisked out of the U.S. and stripped of all constitutional rights, "beyond the writ of" the federal courts. /1

BREAKING: Judge Loren AliKhan is issuing the temporary restraining order Susman Godfrey sought blocking the Trump admin from enforcing parts 1, 3, & 5 of the executive order Trump signed last week targeting the law firm. AliKhan is the 4th judge to grant a TRO against Trump's law-firm EOs.

It's genuinely hard to express to sort of normal not politically plugged in non-lawyers *how* lawless the Trump administration is, and I think that's some part of the problem. You sound like you're hyperventilating, but it's just a flat description of what is going on.

They were indeed very conscious of this distinction and it was carried through to the 14th Amendment. Within literally the same sentence the privileges or immunities clause applies to "citizens" and then twice "any person" for due process and equal protection. They knew what they were doing with it.

Just got word from my college roommate - who is the state archivist for the state of South Dakota - that due to the DOGE shutdowns of IMLS, they can no longer fund InterLibrary Loan in SD. This means exchange between libraries, ability to get books delivered across the system, is gone as of 4/30.

If the U.S. government is going to take the position that, once removed from the United States, folks can’t be brought back, then it sure seems to me that federal courts should be reflexively and categorically barring *all* removals until they’re 100 percent certain that the removals are lawful.

New Mexico proves Heckman right “every dollar spent on high-quality, birth-to-5 programs for disadvantaged children delivers a 13% per annum return from better education & health outcomes for kids, employment gains for parents, greater economic productivity & reduced spending on healthcare & crime

1. LLM-generated code tries to run code from online software packages. Which is normal but 2. The packages don’t exist. Which would normally cause an error but 3. Nefarious people have made malware under the package names that LLMs make up most often. So 4. Now the LLM code points to malware.

It is very good question and one I’ve been asking for months. If there is an international agreement with El Salvador for these renditions, the Trump administration is legally required under the Case-Zablocki Act to share it with Congress. To my knowledge, they have not done so.

HHS Secretary RFK Jr. is a danger to the public’s health and should resign or be fired, says APHA. In just a few short weeks, his actions on vacccines, fluoride and other public health science have shown how wrong he is for the job. Read & share our statement: apha.org/news-and-med...

This is a concession by the U.S. government that its “arrangement” with El Salvador is irrevocable. To me this has to be grounds to argue that the arrangement itself is unconstitutional under the Fifth and Eighth Amendments
