I'm preeeeetty sure the actual episodes had broadcast on terrestrial by that point but even if not there was a ton of information via osmosis from merch, magazines and stuff, and just second hand knowledge from people who had Sky.

I loved Father Ted, Black Books and The I.T. Crowd so I definitely can't claim any high ground over anyone.

oh a plucky young woman gets emotional torn apart by a seemingly nice guy who suddenly takes a dark turn into being an abusive monster wow joss you've done it again

I'm in a Marvel-ish mood and was considering giving Agents of SHIELD another crack but then I remembered how Whedon-y it was.

That does make sense! I'm pretty surprised that it doesn't mention that anywhere in the instructions or on the packaging but I guess the primary target audience already knows

This is my first time with one of these beybladey sets and it spins well enough with a simple push button mechanism. I like that there are clips for the swords. Packaging art is an arms-out look but instructions say that arms and legs must be firmly secured inside the magic energy top at all times.

I don't know anything about the fiction but there's some kind of dragon guy and little dragon build. The fact that there are backpack pegs with nothing attached feels slightly cheap. What is going on with bro's alternate head print?!?

Not really.

So there was a Sega Saturn game that explained all the stuff that happened in the three year time skip between the TV show and the movie. But it never got officially translated...

hell yea

Yeah, but given the timing of the release compared to other movie-fied G1 toys we all know what's up.

I can't believe I'm nostalgic for the Combiner Wars era but remember when a deluxe budget could cover a huge crankin' ratchet in the chest and a fistfootgun?
comment in response to

Yeah but I doubt we'll see G1-ified movieverse or movie-fied G1 again. Though I definitely wouldn't hate seeing silver and blue Missing Link Mirage, or white and green ROTB Wheeljack.

I'll be honest with you buddy, these were all limited edition Japanese-only mailaway figures from the 2000s so they might not be the easiest thing to find for a sane price nowadays.

Anyway I get that this is a hot topic for you and I'm sure we both have better uses for our weekend than forum-fighting so I'm peaceing out on this discussion with an agree to disagree

Yeah, I wasn't a huge fan of Age Of Extinction either, but they made it anyway!

*limit
comment in response to

Anyway my main point is that what is possible with toys doesn't limited what the fiction can do and that's a good thing because if it's a good enough concept then more functional toys can always be made afterwards.
comment in response to
post
That's why I said *existing* toys. Neither of these toys were around in 1986, they were created to replicate cool things that the fiction did.

There are plenty of impossible transformations or combinations in fiction. Just think of Reedman from ROTF who turns from a bunch of ball-bearing minicons into a paper-thin raptor monster. Rodimus sucking his trailer into his legs every time he transforms.

It's good when there is toy/fiction synergy (god knows I love Cybertron more than it deserves) but we wouldn't have things like the Matrix or Hot Rod turning into Rodimus or things the size of Unicron if we were completely beholden to features of existing toys.
comment in response to

Well the toys can't transform in a split second (with some exceptions) or talk (with some exceptions) or fire destructive laser beams (with no exceptions, sadly); exciting and fun things that toys can't physically do is always going to be a necessary part of the fiction.
comment in response to
post
Or it adds fun, because it's really dramatic and cool and you can use your imagination in ways that aren't feasible for physical toys! Besides a lot of cool things that are made up for the fiction get toys later, like Primus, Super Megatron, Unicron of Light etc.

Yeah, I was thinking of Digimon Xros where Shoutmon fuses together with every Digimon in the world, something that the toys sadly but understandably couldn't replicate.

Why not? Anything can happen in a cartoon.

So from then on it was no longer endless repeats of Shaun of the Dead.
It was endless repeats of the sitcom Coupling.

Eventually I figured out the fact that he just wanted English-language background noise and it didn't matter what it was, and for the benefit of my other flatmate who was too meek to do anything and my girlfriend I gave this guy free access to my far larger DVD collection.

It was Shaun of the Dead. So I must have seen that movie on and off in the region of 100 times.
