Ah, the ‘starving artist’ bollocks. Perhaps job centre staff need a training course to help them avoid making ludicrous judgments based on stereotypes.

Thank you. I did get seen in the end. Oxygen and drugs got things under control and I’m back home now, with antibiotics and a plan for several days rest.

AI proved itself to be a useful tool. But that’s all it was, or can ever be. Art - whether music, poetry, literature, painting, acting or many of the other creative pursuits - are, ultimately, an expression of human experience. That’s something AI will never have. 10/10

It’s only a human that can e.g. effectively deliver a lyric about sledging, because it’s only a human that can draw on their experience of the thrill of speeding down a hill, or feeling the biting cold of the snow, and that experience - authenticity - is crucial for producing good music imo. 9/10

While there is software out there that can produce audio, it’s not even close to being the same as human musicians. Humans are needed for nuance and authenticity. 8/10

So far so good. Sort of. ChatGPT can undoubtably create, but it needed help and was only as good as the info a human - me - gave it. What’s lacking though, is artistry. AI might do a perfectly fine job of writing something (in partnership with a human) but music is supposed to be heard. 7/10

While AI did create something, it needed to do it in partnership with a human - me. E.g. I asked for a higher vocal harmony (my creativity). The actual harmony was written by AI (its creativity). 6/10

So: Did AI create something new? Yes. Did it just rearrange other existing ideas? Yes, but that’s what musicians do anyway - we take existing conventions and rearrange them in new ways. Was it a substitute for human creativity? That’s where it gets interesting. 5/10

After a great deal of ‘Now can you add X’ (higher vocal harmony, rhythms, etc, etc), I ended up with something that fulfilled all my specific requirements and wasn’t bad at all (notwithstanding some lyric tweaks from me). Using just the info it gave me, I was able to notate it. 4/10

I also needed to specifically ask for (in no particular order): Chords Melody Vocal harmony Rhythm Dynamics The more info I gave it, the better the song got. 3/10

I asked it to write a Christmas song. Its first attempt was pants, but that had more to do with what I hadn’t specified than anything else. I needed to tell it (in no particular order): In the style of Form Tempo Metre Vocal range Emotion Instrumentation/voicing Genre conventions Key 2/10

Same place and same day of the months screams ritual offering. So, off to Google I go…

I include me in this: Get off social media and get out into the real world. It’s what we used to do - talk to people irl, protest, etc. These days we say what we need to say in the little digital box, maybe vent a bit, and think it’s enough. It isn’t. SM is easy to ignore. Physical people aren’t.

Sounds delish. If you fancy a change, garam masala instead of just nutmeg is lovely. I’ll give just nutmeg a try :)
