Thanks for the heads up. I will have to check out Hold My Own. I thought I had missed Lionheart. I love LH. Also, been listening a lot to Aight Bet, they’re from Chicago.

I think that “the only ones…” is nothing more than “othering”. It feels like bullcorn. All policies that affect communities should be debatable and debated, particularly when there are voices that feel it may not best serve the most vulnerable. Just a thought.

🧵4/4 but trust, I was standing with you in spirit, blasting one of my favorite anthems, Heart of a Warrior:
“I’ve got the fists of a fighter
Heart of a warrior
Scars of a soldier
And the hands of a working man.”
We fight. We build. We endure.
Happy May Day, everyone. ✊🏽

🧵3/4 I hope this May Day reminds us that we can do better, we need to do better — and that when we stand together in solidarity, we can figuratively move the earth… and literally move mountains.
I may not have been shoulder to shoulder with you today —

🧵2/4 I don’t believe in the idea of “aliens” — only fellow men and women seeking opportunity and a better life.
Growing up on the South Side of Chicago, the son of two exceptionally hardworking parents, how could I ever turn my nose up at my fellow working person?

but for everyone living with trauma in this city. And even though people don’t always want to hear it, we have to keep talking about how policies and systems pile on stress for public servants. These aren’t easy conversations, but they’re necessary. I hope Officer Torres rests peacefully.

particularly first responders. I’ve seen it firsthand. Too many of us have. My thoughts are with her family, her friends, her fellow officers, and everyone feeling the impact of this loss. Moments like this make it clear: we need far more mental health support, not just for folks in uniform

💭 What’s your take?
Should communities like Englewood have a say before programs like Felony Bypass are rolled out?
Tag in folks working on community-led justice. Let’s keep this conversation moving.

Safety cannot come at the cost of justice.
True public safety is built with the people, not at their expense.
I'll be sharing the full meeting audio soon. Monday, I'll also send my full written comments to the State’s Attorney, requesting a response or meeting.

I attend beautiful events like this all the time, and they get no play. People need to see the beauty, particularly off the beaten path, of this city. @wgntv.com @blockclubchi.bsky.social @thetriibe.com @wbez.org @abc7chicago.bsky.social @nbcchicago.com …You ALL need to talk to these organizers.

2/3 My first post is a look back at a whirlwind weekend—one filled with tough conversations, meaningful moments, policy writing, and a little good food & laughter to close it out.

How was your weekend?

6/7 I ended the day at a vigil and balloon release for Kaylah Love on the West Side. A few District Councilors came to show support to her family and a hurting community. As I told a family member: “Let us know how we can support you.”

5/7 If you care about police reform, this is your moment to speak up.
CCPSA meets this Thursday at DuSable Museum. Join us. Make public comment. Let’s be clear about what WE want in the new policy. Virtual option too.

4/7 Sunday morning = policy work. I’ve been digging into CPD’s traffic stop policy, and writing recommendations for the new version CCPSA is working on. I’ll be submitting my statement this week and sharing it publicly soon.

3/7 Later that day, I attended the CFIST Town Hall in Bronzeville. Packed house. Powerful panels. Deep gratitude to @caarprnow.bsky.social for the invite & all you do to free political prisoners. Keep inviting me—I’ll keep showing up.

2/7 Saturday morning, I gathered a group of fellow elected officials for a conversation I organized around navigating Chicago politics. Deep, honest, strategic. These convos are crucial for the work ahead.
