This is very plausible and relates to theories on two types of liars. Traditional liars try to deceive because they perceive the listener has power. Authoritarian liars boast lies to project power and test for loyalty by making others embrace them, even knowing they are lies.

I think some people, including on campuses, are unwilling to confess what's happening. They thought the HR version of DEI was silly. So they've railed against it at times.
