Charles Darwin weighing the pros and cons of marriage, 1838

All I want for Christmas is for recommendation letters to be ABOLISHED.

I have given up on all sorts of ~cool~ word processing approaches for writing my book (Zettlr, Ulysses, Scrivener, etc) and am going to do it all in Google Docs because of citation support and the instant sync / sharing options. Honestly feels heretical.

What is $131,742? Answer: this is how much it costs me to fund a PhD student per year for a full RAship in CS at UW (including 100% during the summer). PhD funding can be a confusing topic at US universities. Want to learn more? Take a look at our lab handbook: docs.google.com/document/d/1...

Just be excellent to each other. 😊🤞🦋

America almost died from food poisoning, and now that she's feeling a little better... she's eating the leftovers.

I always forget just how unpleasant a 15 hour flight is

some OpenAI guy says that o1 is better at most humans at most tasks o1, make me a coffee? fail. o1, brush my teeth? fail. o1, drive me to work? fail. … o1 can do literally none of the things I do within the first hour of waking up. but, sure. you're great. never change 😀

Presenting at a conference: 10% the actual talk, 90% figuring out how to say 'next slide' without sounding awkward.

I’ve been watching (and sobbing) along to “A Daily Dose of Sunshine” and dear lord is it amazing

Undergraduates: come spend your summer with us as a paid researcher at CMU! I plan to mentor students interested in data visualization and/or human-AI decision-making in healthcare.

This is an interesting observation. AI facilitates the creation and reinforcement of a fascist aesthetic, where everyone can appear to be “perfect” (youthful, conforming, masculine men and feminine women).

A great class concept with a website so funky that the Fresh Prince himself would probably enroll

Academia is where you work 60 hours a week to avoid working 40 hours a week

Two stages of writing: 1) This shouldn't take too long 2) Oh no

@anhongguo.bsky.social and I are featured in CSE’s annual report article, showcasing our latest work, other accessibility research at UMich, and our vision for the future of accessibility. 🚀 A good read if you’re passionate about AI and accessibility! cse-report.engin.umich.edu/2024/10/25/a...

And here's one for sound designers

This is great! So well framed.

As more and more of our favorite #HCI venues join Bluesky, I created a starter pack with the ones I found @chi.acm.org @acm-dis.bsky.social @chiwork.bsky.social @mobilehci.bsky.social @ieeevis.bsky.social @acm.org @acm-cscw.bsky.social @ozchi-conf.bsky.social #CHI2025 go.bsky.app/GN935Hq

Dear reviewers: As you react/respond to the author rebuttal can you please articulate the answers to these questions in 1-2 sentences each? 1. Why not a lower score 2. Why not a higher score This significantly helps bring everyone (authors/reviewers/AC/SAC) on the same page.

Visiting @umichigan.bsky.social on Monday and giving a talk about my lab's work on Human-Computer "Integration" (lab.plopes.org). If you are around and have time to meet, please DM; looking forward to my 1st time in Ann Arbor. Thanks @anhongguo.bsky.social & Michael Nebeling for inviting & hosting!

Love the influx of academics to Bluesky. Will this be our new 🏠? To help grow the community, I just created an HCI+Accessibility "starter pack". Help me grow the list! Many are missing! go.bsky.app/PZxHNqP

#JobAlert! Come join me at Carnegie Mellon's School of Art— we're hiring an open-rank tenure-track professor in "Experimental Animation and Emerging Media Practices"! Deadline is Jan 5: art.cmu.edu/employment/#...

Too many recommendation letter requests lately—love supporting my students, but it’s overwhelming. Professors, how do you handle this without burning out? Tips welcome!

Audio #production, #mixing, and #mastering tip: Rather than thinking of #mid/side as a way to manipulate the center and edges of the stereo field (it’s not), think of it as X-specific width control. EQ? Frequency-specific width control. Compression? Level-specific width control. 🫡

A message from me, to me. #AcWri #GetYourManuscriptOut

“Messy is what we do” - Paul Dourish’s keynote on what comes after HCI at #OzCHI24

Very interesting paper here comparing a MARL model and a Concordia model on the same topic!

Visualization researchers work with domain experts all the time. Through many collaborations, I've noticed how crucial it is to align expectations from the start. Here I share insights on what makes an effective partnership. What's your experience here? niklaselmqvist.medium.com/what-you-sho...

I have two science hats: behavioural science and design research. The former group is all over Bluesky, but I was missing the design research community. Kept looking for a starter pack, but there were none. Now there is! Want to be on this list? (Or taken off? ;-) Let me know 🤩 go.bsky.app/VM55QQL

MIT has a set of books labelled "Open Access" but it's a little clunky to find them on the MIT Press site, and so I've gone ahead and mirrored 400+ of them here: archive.org/details/mit_...

Speaking of Bergen, ever considered moving to Norway? We have a job opening for a Tenured Associate or full Professor in Visual Data Science / Visualization 📊! I can add that as a tenured associate professor there is a clear path towards promotion to full professor. www.jobbnorge.no/en/available...

Agreed! So lucky.

Looking forward to seeing and showing you around at UMich & Ann Arbor, Pedro!
