RIP Airborne Phased Array Radar (APAR) 😞 Many of my colleagues and friends worked on this technology. I had hoped to use it someday. www.eol.ucar.edu/airborne-pha...

The President of the United States on his social media platform this morning. Not joking.

The highest tariff rates 50% go to the Kingdom of Lesotho (surrounded by South Africa) and St. Pierre and Miquelon, a self-governing French territory off the coast of Newfoundland, population 5000. en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Saint_P...

San Marino and Monaco only get a 10% tariff rate compared with the rest of the EU at 20%. I am sure that little loophole won't get exploited at all. Source: www.cnbc.com/2025/04/02/t...

I wonder how many CI pipelines are failing right now because the security certificate for the PyTorch wheel repo download.pytorch.org/whl/ expired at 11:59 PM UTC. Mine just did.

WASHINGTON (AP) — Cory Booker breaks the record for longest Senate speech, previously held by segregationist Strom Thurmond.

SCOOP: DOGE notified the Institute of Museum and Library Sciences (IMLS) today that the entire staff is being put on administrative leave effective immediately, I’ve learned from an agency source. They’ll be cancelling huge swaths of grants/contracts and starting a Reduction in Force (RIF).

As someone who works at a NSF-funded FFRDC, it would be really helpful to know what the scope of this rumor is. FFRDCs have always had restrictions or conditions on bidding on some types of grants, but not being able to bid on any grants would be existential.

We developed a new approach for hand-labeling supervised #ML in a more reproducible way by integrating methods from #communicationresearch. Check it out for any hand-labeling projects! Coathors include! agupubs.onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/full/10....

In 25 years of covering national security, I’ve never seen a story like this: Senior Trump officials discussed planning for the U.S. attack on Yemen in a Signal group--and inadvertently added the editor-in-chief of The Atlantic. www.theatlantic.com/politics/arc...

I re-played RollerCoaster Tycoon yesterday after not touching it for years. Some things I didn’t realize when playing as a teenager: 1. I was way undercharging for rides and park admission initially, but charging high fees only works for a fairly short time before people stop riding.

This has been fun, so part 2? A 🧵 on a topic I find many students struggle with: "why is their 🗺️ vis better than my 🗺️ vis?" Informed by my teaching & research I just saw this @upshot.nytimes.com article on my feed today, so I want to point out some of the small design decisions I love in this map

The real challenge of weather communication is that much of the ad revenue now goes to Alphabet, Meta, and TikTok without them having to expend capital on studios or going out in the field to collect data and reporting. The weather AI to fear is YouTube’s rec system, not graphcast.

It looks like there are 2 velocity couplets in the storm that just crossed into Mississippi. If we are already getting this kind of situation this early, it’s going to be a very long day for the tornado threat.

A fire burned through our Lake Carl Blackwell Mesonet site around 3:41-3:45pm. One of our thermometers measured a 1-minute average temperature of 173 F at 3:42pm. The 2 meter anemometer is now reporting 0, which indicates that it likely was completely melted. #okwx #okmesonet

Cloture vote on the continuing resolution is finally happening.

Schumer on Senate floor: "Funding the government should be a bipartisan effort, but Republicans chose a partisan path" "Because of that Republicans do not have the votes in the Senate to invoke cloture on the House CR. Our caucus is unified" on the month-long CR

I just called Hickenlooper's and Bennet's office to request they vote no on the House continuing resolution for the rest of the year. If the Senate can make a show of force to show their opposition to Elon/Trump, then they might back down.

Federal employees: the country appreciates you & stands with you. I know you’re under a lot. Hang in there. Here’s a cheat code if asked to do malarkey: “I don’t know, can we get OGC (Office of General Counsel) to give us the green light on this first?” 99% chance they just leave u alone after that.

Scoop: ~33% of NWS offices no longer have sufficient staffing to safely keep 24/7 operations. Critically understaffed @nws.noaa.gov offices now include: Boston Miami Houston Omaha Wichita Kansas City Marquette, MI Sioux Falls, SD Rapid City, SD Cheyenne, WY www.theguardian.com/us-news/2025...

NEW: NOAA cuts jeopardize some hurricane hunter flights, as crews are down to minimum staffing levels for 24/7 operations. www.axios.com/2025/03/06/n...

Trump and Elon want to replace the Nanny State with the Deadbeat Daddy State. Take your paycheck and gamble it away at the casino and on overpriced toys. Promise grand gestures and leave you waiting out in the cold. Start a fight with the helpful neighbor. What else?

Sigh, missing lots of observational (METAR, BUFR, HADS) data via the NWS/NOAA at the moment.

My grand-advisor just won the Turing Award!

And in what is definitely not a metaphor for today, Elon's rocket failed to launch.

A bit of hope to start the week.

NOAA Cuts Leave Wind Chimes As Sole Predictor Of Approaching Hurricanes

Thinking about the good people of @noaa and @nws today. Such a dark day for our nation and our safety.

Breaking: A federal district judge in San Francisco has granted a temporary restraining order stopping the mass firings by the Trump administration of probationary workers at a long list of federal agencies, including the DoD, which has a mass firing planned for Friday.

If you were a gov't employee who was recently fired, go here and enter your info. democrats-science.house.gov/sciencefirings

Probationary employees across @NOAA and the @NWS are being terminated today, including those in mission-essential roles. My own wife is among them, essential to the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center's 24/7 critical mission of seismic monitoring and tsunami prediction to protect the public.

NWS is already understaffed, and this mass firing is only going to increase the chance that warnings are not issued in a timely manner and that key equipment like radars and IT systems will fail at the worst time.
