every office needs at least 11 meteorologists in order to have a minimum of 2 on each of the 3 daily shifts, allowing for leave and time off to rest. offices on this list now have 9 or fewer — which officials told me would quickly mean staff overwork and burnout.

Have you looked into the Boise, Idaho NOAA/NWS office? They staff meteorologist that inform the National Interagency Fire Center of fire weather conditions across the country. I noticed their office is on the doge list to have its lease discontinued.

Hurricane season officially begins on June 1st. Meanwhile, wildfires (175 by last count) are raging across much of the southeast, Texas, and parts of the southwest. If that isn’t enough, AccuWeather is predicting 75 to 150 tornadoes in March, 200 to 300 in April and 250 to 350 in May

You might think, “Hey, we have all these independent weather forecasting companies. Who needs NWS?”

What you don’t know is that the independent weather companies get virtually all their raw data from NWS. Without NWS data, they can’t forecast at all!

You can’t hollow out NWS without consequences.
