The Trump administration is "willing to not just slash and burn research that challenges their political ideology but to replace it with shoddy studies designed to support their goals, under the guise of scientific legitimacy," Katherine J. Wu writes. https://theatln.tc/jxfvKla3

Shocking. Really shocking.

This is a goddamn disgrace www.whitehouse.gov/lab-leak-tru...

A lot of people have been making the point that the GOP is governing like they’ll never face voters in elections again. I don’t think this is right. If they weren’t worried about elections, they wouldn’t be spending effort on the SAVE Act. I think what we’re seeing is a total party breakdown 1/x

"Within minutes after DOGE accessed the NLRB's systems, someone with an IP address in Russia started trying to log in ... Whoever was attempting to log in was using one of the newly created DOGE accounts — and the person had the correct username and password"

This one is for my dad who I lost a year ago. He was a research meteorologist who studied hail storms. As a child, if we came across a storm like this while driving, he’d definitely be stopping the car and getting out to watch. I loved that. TOWERING STORM Ā©2025 Jim Musil

This should be grounds for both parties to come together and remove Trump from office. They have no intention of bringing Garcia back, in defiance of the unanimous Supreme Court decision, and are now labeling him a terrorist, despite no criminal record and being illegally/"accidentally" deported.

There's a reason ICE agents wear masks in the street. From Kristi Noem's war-crime propaganda to the airport officers harassing innocent tourists, the MAGA deportation regime is not just immoral but increasingly criminal Someday, there must be justice. Today's US EO orders the Attorney General to identify + take expeditious action to stop enforcement of "all State & local laws... purporting to address ā€œclimate changeā€ or involving ā€œenvironmental, social, and governanceā€ initiatives, ā€œenvironmental justice,ā€ carbon or ā€œgreenhouse gasā€ emissions."

In case you missed it, Trump also signed an executive order today directing the AG to go after state and local climate policies. Potentially bigger deal than coal order, imo… www.whitehouse.gov/presidential...

University presidents, the time is now! Unshackle the general counsel's office! File all the lawsuits! Release the faculty upon the op-ed sections! Write to your alumni, parents, and donors! You have nothing to lose but a tiny percentage of your enormous endowments... www.nytimes.com/2025/04/08/u...

One year ago today: chasing the solar eclipse in Pennsylvania with some photographer friends, one of the most amazing things I've ever experienced. Check out my video here with original cinematic music: youtube.com/watch?v=oQYh... #photography #nature #solareclipse #naturephotography #filmmaking

If you missed it earlier, my purest and least edited storm chasing video in almost ten years

New video: 45 MINUTES OF LIGHTNING - nearly uncut footage of a vivid light show at sunset over Lake Erie last May. Check it out here: youtube.com/watch?v=LzAs...

This stock market crash thing is so confusing. On one hand you have every economist and bank in the free world freaking out. On the other, there are some blue check accounts on Twitter with ancient statues as their profile pics doing 20 part threads on why down is the new up. šŸ¤·šŸ»ā€ā™€ļø

UPDATE: While it is a ā€œreprieveā€ of sorts with no interruption of service, the effective end date of the contract remains as July 31st, 2025. The discussion surrounding this needs to continue between now and then.

I sold a copy of this bad boy from North Dakota in 2018 yesterday. I've got a huge print gallery on Pixels filled with lightning, supercells, mountains, forests, aurora, and all kinds of awesome stuff. Check it out here: 3-connor-sipe.pixels.com #art #photography #nature #naturephotography

NOAA’s office of Oceanic and Atmospheric Research’s main contract for its websites was not approved for renewal, so I’m told we should expect some of them to start to go down. ā€œLutnick's position on every contract is ā€˜no’ and agency reps have roughly a minute and a half to convince him otherwise.ā€

I spoke to an expert in authoritarianism, who explained to me that things like this are extremely meaningful and they help protect democracy, even if there’s not a straight line between this and actual legislating

The NWS office in Paducah, which has to handle some of the most frequent and impactful weather in America and was nearly taken out by a tornado tonight ahead of a catastrophic flood event has to use a parking lot porta potty because they can’t fix plumbing due to the govt funding freeze.

After 24 hours on his feet, Cory Booker is defending the scientific research establishment of this country - calling out an experience like the one that drives me and SO MANY of my fellow scientists to do the work we do - that maybe we can do for others what we couldn't for our own loved ones.

Sen. Booker’s speech was a substantive and moral account of this moment. He did not read the phone book. He did not babble. For 24 hours @booker.senate.gov laid out a detailed, damning, and critical narrative of truth, history, politics, morality, humanity. What will you do?

Cory Booker as he breaks Strom Thurmond's speaking record: "I'm not here because of his speech. I'm here despite his speech. I'm here because as powerful as he was, the people are more powerful."

Well that was fun while it lasted

There's disagreement in the MAGA inner circle about climate change. Trump says it's not real, Musk says it's real but scientists are exaggerating to get money, Energy Secretary says it's real but he just does not care at all. No part of the administration is sturdy #climatechange #climate

NEW: @aclu.org obtained ICE's "Alien Enemies Act Validation Guide," confirming all it takes to be sent to rot in prison in El Salvador is being Venezuelan and 1) having a tattoo an ICE officer says is a "gang tattoo" and 2) displaying "logos," "symbols" or clothes an ICE officer says are gang signs.

One of the great unsolved mysteries of the world is why I was never able to get more views for these two videos, formerly the biggest and most work-intensive projects I've made. I'm trying some new thumbnails to see if there's any effect bc they're both totally dead right now #art #filmmaking

This seems like a big deal that even the wealthy oil people are on edge about what Trump is doing

The hilly parts of southwest PA and southeast Ohio are awful to try to chase in but when it works out I love how the scenery complements the storm, especially in the spring when all the trees and fields are bare

New video is up! Footage from a beautiful lightning display over Lake Erie last May. Check it out here youtube.com/watch?v=6UTb... Extended version, 20 MINUTES OF LIGHTNING coming soon.

Break it, then privatize it. Building up private U.S. forecasting ability to current NWS levels after such a ruthless and foolish decimation of the NWS will take many years. Billions in costs will occur that would have been avoided had we kept the NWS intact, and many avoidable deaths will occur.

Science will NOT be stopped

What people in every part of higher education need to understand is that Republicans now want to do to universities what they’ve tried to do to labor unions: erase them from the institutional landscape. The question is how much you want to collaborate in your own destruction.

This was the OpEd that reportedly caused her to be arrested. Think about that: a person in America, handcuffed and taken away for their words on paper. www.tuftsdaily.com/article/2024...
