THREAD: Under a new law, thousands of prisoners in Louisiana have been cut off from ever getting a chance at parole. Why? Because an algorithm said so. 1/

The legal prohibition against territorial conquest is a pillar of the current global legal order. Too bad it's dying. My latest for @wpr.bsky.social.

HHS Secretary RFK Jr. is a danger to the public’s health and should resign or be fired, says APHA. In just a few short weeks, his actions on vacccines, fluoride and other public health science have shown how wrong he is for the job. Read & share our statement: apha.org/news-and-med...

Well, this is terrifying - clear signs of efforts to deploy the anti-terrorism apparatus against domestic political opponents

"The combination of interest rates soaring amid a slump and the currency plunging despite rising interest rates isn’t what we normally expect for advanced countries, let alone the owner of the world’s leading reserve currency. It is, however, what we often see in emerging-market economies."

Immigration too often gets described with disaster language: a flood of immigrants, etc. But the flood of bad/cruel immigration policy out of this administration is actually the disaster, it is overwhelming.

Several thoughts about this very helpful interview on NYT w Chris Eisgruber, president of Princeton, about existential attacks on higher ed, how and what solidarity among American universities looks like. And why it's worth the listen. (Also a dopey headline.) 1/ www.nytimes.com/2025/04/09/p...

🧵 None of the humans with autism in our lives need curing & RFK & everyone like him can go to hell

I keep thinking about how women are most at risk of being murdered by abusive men after they've decided to leave the relationship and it's not exactly a subtle comparison to what's being done to the USA at the moment

Two of the most thoughtful colleagues working on European development finance in the FT & PROSPER discussing the EBRD as template for European rearmament bank. I'm surprised the EBRD hasn't already suggested this as part of its ongoing 'mission creep'.

NEW: China increases tariffs on US imports from 84% to 125%. The dollar is slumping. US bond yields are rising, threatening a debt crisis. Stock market is set for worst week since global financial crash. Trump is in a war he should never have started. And he doesn’t have the cards.

Zuck/Meta making the Llama4 LLM models more right-wing essentially to appease Trump makes the whole GenAI game even more problematic than it already was. And being free-to-use open models means they will get that use, as they bake the bias even further in. www.404media.co/facebook-pus...

Re Trump signing an EO to hurt Chris Krebs for sharing true information about elections four and a half years ago, I realize we don't seem to have a word for using/abusing executive powers to punish and bully an individual. It's a particular and scary idea, but hard to swiftly articulate.

Unfortunately for Trump, the US coal industry suffers from some truly unavoidable economic realities. Coal plants in the US are, on average, 45 years old. This aging fleet also has higher maintenance and upkeep costs for equipment than competing types of power.

Coming tomorrow from Telegraph Towers: "I stubbed my toe in the bath... and the Democrats are to blame"

The message from the Left should be: tariffs bad, industrial policy good. Sure, there are niche cases where tariffs might be useful as part of industrial policy, but it really weakens the message to add qualifiers. Fight unreservedly against the thing destroying the economy.
