I write sometimes: F/SF/H/Myst &, when I can, superheroes! Tweets a mix of self-promotion, pop cultural musings, whimsy, politics. Older than I used to be. http://www.pulpanddagger.com/dk_latta.html https://www.amazon.ca/s?k=dk+latta&crid=3MO9V7TS40KDB&spr

A good thread, not just about glibly normalizing the 51st state threat but a dilemma I often find myself in, esp. in regards my purview: CDN pop culture and shows like Q and Commotion: defending the idea (the importance!) of the CBC while having troubling issues with the CBC as it is :(

Continuing my #CanadianTV thoughts: CBC's crime-drama, #Saint-Pierre. So far it's...OK. Basically just decent enough (personable actors, brisk pacing, beautiful setting -- wonder if Saint-Pierre et Miquelon will see a tourism boost?) without weathering much scrutiny. I wasn't a big fan...1/4

I appreciate this response from Ed Yong on why he requests that people mask at his events. www.nytimes.com/2025/02/22/m...

“A reminder to believe nothing you see or hear on CBC.” Because if you did, they’d keep the power to hold Pierre to account for the things he says and does! And god forbid anyone does that!! Chickenshit, autocratic rhetoric from a guy who keeps boosting bootlicker media

Because it's soooo cold, but I need my right hand (for phone, sort change, etc.) I've started wearing a tight black glove on my left hand but my right hand bare. Funnily, I met another guy who had, independently, been doing the same thing. It's the V.H. Adderly look! (That's a pop ref, kids :)

As a film & tv writer I struggle with this sooooooo much

Recently started re-listening to Canadia: 2056 and it really is, I think, an extraordinary and unique series in the annals of sci-fi radio comedy. There's Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy, of course, and other very funny (mostly British) ones: Welcome to Our Village - Please Invade Carefully 1/2

I always wish my social media stuff (blogs, twitter, this) was more popular, not just 'cause of egomania (lol) but because I genuinely like to ruminate about storytelling and to promote things & ideas (even when I'm being critical).

Bittersweet thread: read a couple of Star Trek novels recently that I thought were pretty good. I'd read Trek novels over the yrs, but often found TOS books never quite captured the show & often seemed hawkish (mainly fighting Klingons/Romulans, etc). But these 2 novels, I could really picture...1/4

Good Lord! I only half heard about this "Gulf of Mexico" controversy. But it is terrifying. When people show you who they are - believe them :(

Recently re-read stuff of mine that I hadn't even thought about for years: and I'm kind of surprised it's pretty good -- I can be biased (obv!) but equally distance maybe means I'm reading it w/ "fresh" eyes as tho someone else's writings. But not a lot of homes for prev pub novellas & the like :(

I suspect it's common when reading a story (as a reader) or imagining one (if you're a writer) to whimsically "cast" actors in your mind as the characters. As someone who spent years writing about (& defending) CDN film & TV, 90% of the time I cast CDN actors in these movies-in-my-mind's-eye :) 1/2

I should've clarified I meant in police/detective stories. in the TV series King I believe lead detective King (Amy Price-Francis) was referred to as "Staff"; in the the Karl Alberg novels he's "Staff", etc.

I've written A LOT how in Canada books/movies/tv hide that it's Canada. But then there are those who, in response, try to make their stories *very* CDN. There's a preponderance of "Staff Sergeants" in such stories - but I'm never sure if it's properly used (seeming an all-purpose rank lol)

Since satire should try to have impact: free sketch idea for SNL / Saturday Night Live (or THH22M anyone) I Love Lucy spoof with Musk as Ricky and Trump in a dress and apron as Lucy. He'd *hate* that and it might help to drive a wedge between them in a way learned editorials might not lol.

There's the cliché that comedians don't laugh at jokes but just sagely say "funny." But I wonder about for other arts (writing, music, etc.)? When I read (or watch movies/tv), even when I enjoy it, I'm always sort of simultaneously dissecting the craft, pondering the writer/creator's choices

What's happening in the US folks had forewarned about (Cassandra-style): but a disturbing lesson about the slide into authoritarianism (for Canada & other countries who aren't immune) is how many people in various institution (academia, army, media) are happy to go along with it

Watching Paradise and enjoying it well enough (good scenes/acting) but I don't know if it's my age/experience (reading/watching these kind of stories) or what but for a twisty mystery series it doesn't feel that surprising/mysterious in its plot twists (so far)

(One of) my passion projects was/is my Masques Chronicles (vol. 1 & 2) in which I poured all my obsessions into one pot: stories imagining a generations-spanning Canadian superhero universe, reflecting both CDN history/culture & superhero tropes of diff decades...1/2 www.amazon.ca/Masques-Chro...

Shows like Allegiance also have a tricky needle to thread, expounding progressive politics within the cop/police milieu (which in reality is more reactionary/RW) and with audiences (hopefully) more conscious of the copaganda aspect. Do you portray police as they are, or as you'd like them to be?

Well that's disappointing :( Diving back into watching a bunch of CDN TV, the 1st season of the #CBC crime-drama #Allegiance (w/Supinder Wraich and Enrico Colantoni) was among my top picks. But I've started on the 2nd season and, um, I hate to say it but has it kind of Jumped the Shark already? 1/6

Might experiment posting same/similar threads on the different sites and see which gets more (or any! lol) engagement

Bluesky does an interesting job of showing me tweets -- or whatever we call 'em (psst, I'm a newbie) -- that I'm aligned with politically (whether that's good is another debate); what I don't get is all the mushroom posts. What about me screams to a soulless algorithm: this guy luvs his mushrooms???

Reminds me of one of the most interesting scenes in Star Wars U (social commentary-wise): the scene in Obi-Wan where they hitch a ride with the friendly, affable transport driver...who is an Empire true believer and shops them to the stormtroopers, convinced he's doing the right thing

Just a punch on the head, Ted A poke in the eye, Sy Make fists to deploy, Roy And set those mitts free Just a smack in the teeth, Keith Will knock em right off their damn feet Then get a kick in the balls, Paul And you'll watch them all fall

My story, "Shadows of the Forgotten Empire," is on-line at Swords & Sorcery Magazine (#156). I try cramming a lot into a few K words lol: action, horror, character arc, allegory; mashing S&S fantasy, quasi-Roman Emp, steampunk, etc. 1/2 swordsandsorcerymagazine.com/shadows-of-t...

I've never been that good with the social media stuff (lol) but figured I should try here. I'll prob still use the other too, mostly because I feel bad for the people who've built up a following - unlike me :( - and it's their on-line "home." Gonna try n re-follow folks I followed over there :)
