It was great to be able to look around these new scrapes and ponds at Liston in Essex this morning. Part of an Environment Agency River Stour enhancement project. They should be excellent for wildlife. #pond

Singles of BRIMSTONE and SMALL TORTOISESHELL butterflies at Long Melford today were both new for the year. #Suffolk 🦋

It was nice to get out to some local ancient woodland with the moth trap last night. Nothing rare, just the 'usual' late winter species, but good to see some moths about. #longmelford #suffolk #mothsmatter

Some of the wintering flock of 42 White-fronted Geese that were still present at Liston in Essex (around TL857445) this morning. Best viewed from the public footpath off Liston Lane. #essexbirding

Two magnificent ancient oaks from today in Long Melford, Suffolk.

The wintering GREAT GREY SHRIKE at Copt Hall, Little Wigborough showed nicely this morning (better than my photo suggests). Also, 2 SMEW (1 male), 14 BLACK-NECKED GREBES, 2 SLAVONIAN GREBES, 2 CATTLE EGRETS and 6 WHITE-FRONTED GEESE at nearby Abberton Reservoir. #essexbirding

One of the problems with using Heras-type fence panels to keep deer out of coppice coupes is trying to remove it later - after the vegetation has grown up through it. 🫣 Today at Groton Wood in Suffolk.

Some local 'deadwood' photos I took last week. I needed one to include on a 'poster' for a woodland visit planned for later this year. These trunks should be an important habitat for invertebrates, fungi etc for decades. The importance of deadwood is often greatly under-appreciated. #suffolk

Hello all. A random question for the day. Does anyone know how many OS 10km squares (partial or complete) cover Great Britain for natural history recording purposes? I'm interested for the purposes of moth recording. Thank you in advance. #mothsmatter #teammoth
