Yet another England rugby match in which Henry Slade did nothing of note. How much longer must we suffer this man? Has he got Polaroids of Steve Borthwick? Can't think how else he continues to get picked.

Ah, sad news about Rick Buckler. Let it not be forgotten that he was one-third of The Jam (it wasn't all Weller) and a vital component of their unique style. RIP.

Liverpool Football Club ruined my childhood, at least from a sporting point of view, so this is payback time. Thank you so much Plymouth Argyle. Arne Slot still has plenty to learn about English football.

I'm a total train nerd so I shall certainly be buying this and I'm sure it will be well worth reading.

So, we all know that Manchester United struggle to score goals, right? Today that great tactical genius Amorim picks a team without any recognized striker and hey, guess what, they don't score any goals! How predictable! But am I missing anything? Can any Man Utd fan explain this to me?

England's women cricketers have been appalling in Australia this winter. They may be professional now but unfortunately they still play like amateurs.

This one was somewhere in-between. It didn't seem to have the compelling strangeness that I remember from my previous read 15-20 years ago. Took a long time to get going and sometimes read more like teenage fiction than adult SF. Worth reading but inferior IMO to The Day of the Triffids.

In stark contrast to The Kraken Wakes, which does qualify for Brian Aldiss's 'cosy catastrophe' jibe, The Day of the Triffids has confirmed its position as one of my favourite novels. Yes, I know it's only genre fiction but who cares when it's this entertaining and thought-provoking?

Reading a lot of catastrophe fiction at the moment and this one was very disappointing. The story's OK but the characters are flat and I didn't care for the narrator's tone. The imminent destruction of the human race is treated like a minor inconvenience under discussion at a Hampstead dinner party!

It looks like I sold 55 copies of this book last year, which is very good for me. Find out why people love this 1940s psychological thriller by buying a copy! Widely available online or can be ordered from UK bookshops. DM me in the event of problems. Thanks.

One of my claims to fame is that, for a short while in the 1980s, I was in Venture Scouts with Marianne Faithful's half-sister...

You have to scroll a long way down the rugby union section of the BBC website this morning to find anything about last night's game involving England's all-conquering under-20s team. Don't young people matter then, BBC?

England's under-19 cricketers were involved in a terrifically exciting Test match today and yet I can't find any mention of it on the BBC Sport website. Why? These kids are the future!

A very bad day for England's men and women cricketers. Need to be better.

Well, Stuart Rose, since I've been working from home I've probably been at least 100 percent more efficient, largely because I don't have to deal with requests to unjam the photocopier or change the water-cooler refill! Don't tar everyone with the same brush.

Nice to see Man Utd honouring the legacy of Dennis Law with another weak-as-piss performance...

Do more celebrities die these days than in the past or are their deaths just more widely reported?

The FA Cup is fatally degraded in the absence of replays - discuss.

Well here's a lovely 60th birthday present for me! 12 weeks of gas works directly outside my house, with maximum potential for noise, disruption and inconvenience. Thanks, guys!

Just watched Conclave. Beautifully photographed and Fiennes, Lithgow and Tucci are all excellent but it's very slow and the story's no great shakes. Much ado about nothing I thought.

Discover (or re-discover) the novels of Nigel Balchin in 2025. Beautifully designed and scrupulously edited, these are all keepers.

I have a feeling we may see a record number of snoods on tonight's Match of the Day...

Read this over Christmas and it's totally blown my tiny mind. Quite extraordinary. What should I read next by this author? Suggestions please.

Morning walk along the front at Spittal, near Berwick-upon-Tweed.

All the Nigel Balchin novels I have reissued are attractively presented, contain useful introductions and footnotes and retail at £9.99 (pback) and £3.99 (ebook). Full details of how to buy these books can be obtained from the home page of my website: www.nigelmarlinbalchin.co.uk
