One more thing. Much of the opposition to this bill was premised on the idea that hydrogen blending – specifically Modern Hydrogen's turquoise hydrogen tech – significantly reduces emissions. The problem is that, *particularly* when it comes to turquoise hydrogen, the evidence says otherwise. /1

Here's a recap of Monday's hearing, which has been continued by the Senate Energy and Environment to today (i.e. right now): oregoncapitalchronicle.com/2025/02/12/n...

Thank you to my peers in the BDS movement for identifying Chevron as a sponsor of the PDX City Club event series. I asked them to drop sponsorship and they’ve agreed. Solidarity includes actions of all sizes. Special thanks to Councilor Koyama Lane for leading on this.

Update: the gas industry has turned out in force to oppose… *checks notes* … a basic notice requirement. NW Natural doesn’t think they should even have to tell you if they start blending stuff in the gas system.

Oregon climate & energy folks: My colleague Danny has a really informative thread on NW Natural's hydrogen blending project. In short, it's really expensive and provides no climate benefit at all; Fancy greenwashing to delay regulation of its gas system. Follow @dnnynnn.bsky.social for more.

The Oregon Senate's Energy and Environment Committee is holding a hearing today on SB 685, which would require gas utilities to give notice to the Public Utilities Commission of any hydrogen blending occurring in their system. /1

Great turnout at this morning's protest at Portland City Hall. Portlanders came together in outrage against Mayor Wilson's decision to green light the expansion of Texas-based fossil fuel company Zenith Energy's operations in Portland. #StopZenithOil

I just submitted testimony opposing the appointment Michael Jordan as the City Administrator. Cultural change at the City will be much harder to achieve if those responsible for the City’s current culture remain entrenched in leadership positions, & suffer no consequences for their past behavior.

think of all the crazy people confirmed into Trump's cabinet. But it's the support for *unions* that may be a bridge too far for Republicans

Google spent billions of dollars on this shit.

Breach's Climate & Energy Strategist Danny Noonan worked with @fminus.bsky.social to identify lobbyists who advocate for climate, health, & the environment & who *also* lobby for Oregon's largest fossil fuel company NW Natural 🧐 Conflict of interest much? oregoncapitalchronicle.com/2025/01/16/n...

Consumer Energy Alliance (oil and gas lobbyists) quietly backed a non-profit group that says natural gas bans hurt minorities www.washingtonpost.com/climate-envi...

New polling out today -- voters SUPPORT phasing out fossil fuels. The last election cycle, both Harris and Trump said "drill baby, drill" but it turns out that this doesn't track with popular opinion. 👇 climateandcommunity.org/research/vot...

Why does Oregon funnel money to tech companies in the form of tax breaks so that they can setup data centers that dont create jobs and instead will stress the grid?

A panel of authorities on the data center industry told Northwest energy planners this morning that the tech sector will take all the electricity it can get its hands on. They warned of severe consequences -- including occasional rolling blackouts -- if the region doesn’t act.

one of the things about the Green New Deal era of US climate politics that I miss has to do with this - felt like there was a real sense that political energy could and should be devoted to building actual stuff. still on that team

On Wednesday, I am talking with the folks working on ***geothermal heat networks*** in the Northeast, including someone from the utility Eversource, which is busy building a pilot project. Got any questions about how these things are shaping up?

Ok, well, a 2 hour 48 min martial law declaration in the Motherland wasn't how I thought pub day would go but here we are lol. My book is officially out today! A little 🧵 on some main points 1/
