an unpredictable and terrifying agenda.
In other news; instead of requests for ASD evaluations… I’m now seeing a spike in requests to evaluate for ADHD, ODD, anxiety, OCD… How bizarre?!

“Bruh, have you seen what those guns do? If I’m gonna die, I’m going out laughing at farts. Do YOU still take your lock-down drills seriously?”
I wasn’t ready for my 9yo to be acutely aware and unbothered that being murdered in her classroom is a normalized part of her childhood
This is failure.

My spouse in tech (who unequivocally supports my dreams and thinks I’m a badass) also thinks everything about medical training and the practice of medicine is absolutely farcical.
The amount of expected unpaid labor alone… he and his Tech/IT bros would never.

I’ve never seen a person look so mortified while I described what has become “par for the course” for me and my recent fellow grads. Apparently, none of these things, are things where they are.
Can you imagine?
Wild.
Pretty sure they’re gonna stay put.

Debated how to ask about these things, without actually asking these things, so you’re not labeled a troublemaker… ya know… the basics.

We talked about the “business” of applying to positions in the states: obtuse interview games, credentialing nightmares, non negotiable salaries, non-competes, supervisory clauses, salary withholding for failure to meet RVU minimums, diminishing clinical autonomy… the “take it or leave it mentality”

To know your worth. To not allow yourself to be gaslit by those who would rather replace you than advocate for you.
I’m hopeful that things will calm down soon, and I hope to re-engage with the online community that helped me survive residency, the pandemic, parenting!
Until then,

So in some ways… I am in survival mode.
But the BEST kind, because everything is working out.
And I’ve never been so passionately surrounded by people who are supporting and lifting me up.
Which started when I walked away from every space where I knew I wasn’t truly valued.
It is SO important

I have definitely upset the status quo along the way.
But there are too many brilliant people in this state, trying to pull off Herculean feats to protect SC’s children… and I didn’t feel like I had much choice.
We are never going to improve anything by doing the same things that aren’t working!

All while running a national recruiting committee for DBP, settling into our forever home in Charleston, navigating Middle School, keeping 3 kids alive, being team Mom for 4 activities, trying to edit a textbook, pursuing multiple ventures with the AAP,
… and of course, staying 2 steps ahead, cuz

Be able to support my family after fellowship…
And now I do policy by day, see patients after work, partner with a nonprofit on weekends, and in my spare time, train >50 SC physicians to administer ASD screeners, allowing them to better recognize ASD and advocate for their patients

And in true ADHD fashion, I decided to aggressively pursue all of the above, assuming that at least one would pan out by the time I finished fellowship.
But then… ALL THE THINGS HAPPENED
(except homeschooling. I could never)
So for over 20 months, I’ve been working most waking minutes to

While xo tending with #burnout and no $$ cushion, I considered:
- Start a practice
- Pursue a policy position
- Partner with a nonprofit ❤️
- Empower GenPeds to do DBP work
-Consider industry?
-Screw it all and homeschool my kids
Because I sure as hell wasn’t leaving the community we built

Being wholly unfamiliar with the “flight” option, and having been told there would be no attending DBP position for me after graduation (I can not wait to tell that story one day) I took a brief moment to rage cry, took stock of the options I had, and dug in.
