Madness He is destroying our country

This is not law. It couldn’t withstand legal scrutiny. Don’t comply in advance university presidents. General counsel, don’t panic. Do law, not vibes.

“The US of AI,” public draft of a talk given yesterday at Princeton. drive.google.com/file/d/1O2qk...

I just got fired from NWS . This email is all I know. Read if you want.

It may not be cool or hip in some circles, but we legitimately do need a massive amount of people to run for office. Flood the school boards, councils, county seats, state legislatures, Congress, etc. Big changes at the top happen when the ground shifts at the bottom. And that can start now.

Destruction of critical thinking continues apace.

The Times spoke to people being trapped inside a Panama hotel after deportation from the US and the individual stories of horror are almost too much to bear www.nytimes.com/2025/02/18/w...

Yeah so the Constitution isn’t really in effect right now

Imagine a computer calling you dumb, forever

I taught a Musk-thinks-he’s-Harry-Seldon sci-fi lit course (thanks to Jill Lepore’s Evening Rocket podcast!) in 2023 but I honestly didn’t think he’d weasel his way to planetary power this quickly.

NASA Global temperatures in 2024 were 2.30°F (1.28°C) above the agency’s 20th-century baseline (1951-1980), which tops the record set in 2023. The new record comes after 15 consecutive months (June 2023 through August 2024) of monthly temperature records - an unprecedented heat streak.

I missed the last part of the interview because, once he started interpreting Pride and Prejudice and suggested that the rich ladies are doing just fine under patriarchy because of the husbands’ nice colonial income, I must have passed out from rage-laughing.

I am a former incarcerated firefighter. I served in a California fire camp from 2009 to 2012. Misinformation is afire on the internet, so here are facts about the prison firefighter program, all in one place. A thread.

The state of the AI-in-the-classroom debate, aptly summarized. www.reddit.com/r/Professors...

All respect to the Luddites, but also: I don't think scholars who use digitized archives and online journal databases and Powerpoint presentations and all the rest of it are best understood as "anti-technology" if they resist the use of generative AI to undermine the integrity of research or writing

I think we need to separate the disciplines on the question of AI. I feel very confident AI has no substantive place in the humanities, but I’m willing to let other disciplines deal with their own turf. This will require central administrators to acknowledge there cannot be a universal standard.

Merry Christmas to all

"Instead of traditional classroom teachers, the school will employ 'guides,' who won't teach students academics but will instead ... point them to the right video explanation" This is what they mean when they say AI won't *replace* teachers - it'll *deprofessionalize* them

Newsletter: Our digital lives are unregulated growth-hacked ecological disasters. The modern tech ecosystem's growth-at-all-costs mindset is actively harming billions of people, pushing them toward authoritarianism for profit. We must fight back. www.wheresyoured.at/never-forgive-them/

Someone chided me for being a “jerk” to the hucksters pushing AI in classrooms. I’ll just say that given how deeply opposed I am to all that, “jerk” is probably going to be my mildest setting. So if you get the vapors when people yell at snake oil salesmen, you may just want to block me.

so much of teaching is teaching students that they are worth taking seriously, that they should take themselves seriously, that the world is in their hands, that they are up to its challenges (this will be my only contribution to the current discourse about ai in the classroom)

Thus the beginning of the end of the AI bubble. Hold on to your seats, folks.

Insanity.

While CEOs breathlessly talk about AI as the second coming by trading in delusions and fantasies, never lose sight of what it is *actually doing* and who bears the costs

Important lessons from old books: "Victorian novels chronicle the terrible grief of losing children. Depicting the cruelty of diseases largely unfamiliar today, they also warn against being lulled into thinking that child deaths can never be inevitable again." theconversation.com/infectious-d...
