I've been experiencing a strange and puzzling computer problem for some time. Whenever I get up from my chair, my monitor goes blank. It turns out, the reason behind it is far more rational and fascinating than thinking my monitor is possessed. www.theregister.com/2020/01/09/o...

Today’s Wordle was so bad. Wordle 1,310 6/6 ⬛⬛⬛🟩⬛ ⬛🟩⬛🟩⬛ ⬛🟩⬛🟩🟩 ⬛🟩⬛🟩🟩 ⬛🟩⬛🟩🟩 🟩🟩🟩🟩🟩

David Lynch gave us the language we needed to better articulate the indescribable strangeness of our shared reality. “Lynchian” is so overused because it’s a viscerally understandable word without any known synonyms. I can’t imagine a more beautiful artistic legacy than that.

not Lynch's movie, I know, but god, what a sendoff

I've been using computers since 1996 and today was the first time a drive died on me.

“I know the company I work for helped facilitate a literal genocide but I’m upset that it’s now pretending to change its content policy to virtue signal to the upcoming administration.”

“We commonly associate the writer with the land of his birth—America—and with the land of his expatriation, France. But a fascinating new exhibit focusses on Baldwin’s years in Turkey, the country that, in his words, saved his life.” www.newyorker.com/culture/crit...

Assuming they do, I'm looking forward to seeing who the NYT replaces Krugman with. Selfishly, I hope it's that rabbit-loving economist who uses the so-called insights of his chosen field to comment on social issues in the most twisted way possible. He'd be fun, and perfectly apt for this moment.

All things aside, Erdogan might just be the luckiest person in the world. I have no doubt he will somehow make a mess of it again, though.

This is possible, but it assumes Musk wouldn't bend the knee when Trump demands it. It's already happened, and Musk needs Trump a lot more than Trump needs him.

In Turkey, male homicides have fallen but female homicides have increased. Why might this be? @gunesasik.bsky.social & Mocan suggest that withdrawing from the Istanbul Convention (which stands against GBV) signalled impunity… www.nber.org/papers/w33169

I've been seeing lots of skeets about the shortcomings of @bsky.app's verification system (some of which are valid), but what they need to implement first and implement fast is support for 2FA and/or passcodes. It's *a lot* harder to get people to adopt it after they have created their account.

The old Twitter is back!

Turns out, I've missed making lists.

Starter packs is one of those features that will make @bsky.app succeed where Mastodon didn't, but I wish there was a (faster) way to transfer over the people in a pack to a list instead of following them.

There will be many terrible consequences of this election, most of which are hard to predict right at this moment, but one thing's for sure is that it's going to be a lot harder for a woman to be nominated again.

JDV’s recent interview with the NYT proves a possible, even probable second term of Trump presidency is infinitely more terrifying than the first one.

It's genuinely sad, and quite baffling, how some people I used to respect bring up MLK's Letter from Birmingham Jail while defending Israel's genocide. How can anyone be so blind?

It should be punishable offense to change the cover of a book after it's been adapted to another medium. Equally so when it's won an award.

God damn it, I lost my 162 days long streak in Wordle.

So this is what it feels like.

Finally got a passable audio setup and it's remarkable how badly mixed most songs are. No wonder people buy into the lossless bullshit.

I decided not to upgrade my Kindle Paperwhite from a decade ago thinking it wouldn't be financially prudent as it runs fine, but then I spent four times the amount on special edition books. Too bad none of the books are about managing money.

Boeing is what happens when a company is captured by run of the mill MBAs, who then capture the body that's supposed to regulate them.

America is the greatest country that has ever existed. www.youtube.com/watch?v=Pjbk...

This is so stupid, I can't believe it's real.

“Tell it to earth” sounds like something Greenzo would say.

This will be an unmistakable stain on Habermas's legacy. www.normativeorders.net/2023/grundsa...

Can we do a poll on who the electorate believe is more likely to die of old age come the election?
