on wednesday, march 5, i'll be interviewing the great guitarist william tyler at public records in brooklyn, part of a listening event for his ranging new guitar/zones record, "time indefinite" & really excited to hear it through public records' sound system. form.typeform.com/to/JtXdcWmw?...

There’s a parallel track of tech barons becoming more comfortable w/being openly fascist while their companies push devices that are more and more invasive, and I don’t think it ends with people happily installing these things in their homes, and wearing them on their faces.

Alice Coltrane's show at the Hammer is just gorgeous — and a lesson in the ways in which we can come together to build our own communities. I write about it for this week's Art Insider for @kcrw.com email.kcrw.com/love-grief-a...

Not disappointed in Pod Save America's Bill Maher episode simply because he is an anti-vaxxer homophobe with 1980s jokes, he just makes people stupid—Maher's intellectually lightweight fake edgy brand makes people stupid. @thenation.com got this right years ago www.thenation.com/article/cult...

Hypnotic, timeless, beautiful piece. And that lineup—Bob James, Idris Muhammad, Joe Farrell and others on this likely overlooked entry in Roberta Flack’s discography. Collectors digging for CTI, Kudu LPs and related soul-jazz/fusion cheap heat would do well to pick this up

Difficult to convey in a photograph how extraordinary the Frey House II is in person; make sure you visit if you find yourself in Palm Springs 🌵🩵 Albert Frey, 1963-4

Tonight! Come on down.

Well if nothing else at least the worst people in the world are showing their whole asses, no more guessing who *might* be a racist sexist fascist dirtbag.

Floating Points last night—brain-scrambling live visuals; driving, bass-heavy club fare but also hyper colorful prog house w/ warm modular synth textures; rich, probing ambient + live harp contributions from Philly’s Mary Lattimore, who dazzled a chatty crowd in opening set with Julianna Barwick

S/O to Pat Sansone's "Baroque Down Palace" John Paul Jones-themed @eastvillageradio.bsky.social show for its inclusion of Billy Nicholls. We'll never find nor own an OG copy of that LP, so the CD works for now. What a gem (thanks to friend wisely not on this platform for tuning us into the show)

Younger me would never have thought that an in-depth examination of what were profoundly mysterious bands would ever see the light of day. Was able to catch some of these legends back in the day / was in short-lived Philly-area bands that played w/ a couple of 'em. I love this documentary

Holy chowder—Chase Fetti's “Refuse 2 Lose” has little competition for the Grimiest Rap I’ve Heard This Morning. Faint vocal reverb capping off each bar, an icy, bare-bones snare and kick, Bernard Herrmann-sounding string stabs, and what is that? Sleigh bells?! tidal.com/browse/track...

“In ‘Alabama,’ Coltrane asks us to bear witness to this hole in the ground, which is also a hole in America’s story, which is also a hole in the heart of black Americans”—this 2020 Ismail Muhammad piece on “Alabama” and “unceasing immersion in grief” is great www.theparisreview.org/blog/2020/06...

Happening now: protesters are outside the Fine Arts Building on Michigan Avenue in downtown Chicago this evening. People are in line to see House of Reps Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries for an event tonight promoting his recently released book. Crowd chanting at them, "we don't need a book tour!"

Won't deny loving spectacle and languid jams of the Brian Jonestown Massacre when I caught them w/ friends in Philly a few times 25+(?) years ago / like their records--and relished the new Dig! in a Brooklyn theater recently--but am nodding in agreement here sterlewine.substack.com/p/dig-xx-not...

75 years ago yesterday WNYC aired the Miles Davis Sextet performing live at the original Birdland in New York City. The band included J.J. Johnson, Stan Getz, Tad Dameron, Gene Ramey, and Art Blakey!
